block huggers on SBC400?

Post by zebedee99 »

anyone have any experience with putting block huggers on a SB Chev 400? I bought some huggers, but an engine reconditioning guy I spoke to said he did it once (in a cortina, mind!!) and it reduced the torque he was getting. took 'em off and put the standard extractors back on. well before i put them up for sale on tardme I thought I'd see if anyone else had any ideas on the matter? cheers

not all block huggers are created equal i got a cheap set and they didnt do anything to wards helping horse power and they leaked on the rear ports because of bad design. i got a custom set made and the truck runs a lot better as well as cooler.
cheers

block huggers in a 40 are a pain ,because they end up inside the chassis rail .if you make your own you can have them run where they need to run not where the manufacturer thinks they need to run.i run 1 5/8 primaries on my 400 and its goes pretty good.you dont need 2 inch primaries like the drag racers run

ta for the input. have some already so i'll have a look and see how they line up at least - custom sounds, umm, well expensive. not that running a 40 with a 6.6L engine was ever gonna be cheap, but THE LIST keeps growing. you know how it is....sort the caster due to recent spring lift, organise roll cage, cut down and mount the rear seats to fit behind the LPG tank, re-upholster them, new radiator (4 core? fit decent fan shroud?), fabricate new seat mounts, change over front seats to something more comfortable, fit 3 point seat-belts rather than lap belt, fit new exhaust manifold gaskets at least, change rocker cover gaskets. new cam, lifters? power steering. umm, am sure i'll think of something else. join 4wd club, break stuff. :D

good radiator is a MUST .went thru a few till i found one that would handle it .because of the siamesed bores in a 400 they need a lot more cooling than a 350.finally settled on 4 core commodore crossflow with baffles .tried a 3 core commodore and it was borderline (its in beercruisers cruiser now :D )and ended up using (i hate to admit it )but an xf f**D fan (cant even write the word without getting the hebby gebbies :D )but by god it moves some air :D
