Dunrobbin road 28th december 08 (oamaru - to ranfurly )

Post by philux »

Im planning on doing the dunrobbin track on the 28th december if the track is open (gotta call the land owner a week before to see if weather conditions allow) Got a total of 5 possibles now so might be room for a couple more. The track goes in near oamaru and comes out at shingly creek (pigroot
- inland track to get from palmy to ranfurly) if anyone else is keen post up.

Also wanting to know has anyone this track before :?:

This description taking from 4WD South by Mark Wilson

The kakanui mountains and the many peaks north-east of them form a formidable barrier between Ranfurly and Oamaru. The two usual routes between them are Danseys Pass to the north, and the coastal highway south to Palmerston and then north on the pigroot. This demanding alternative takes you from Oamaru inland to the headwaters of the Kakanui River, then to the top of Mt Obi (1425m) in the kakanui range, then down onto the pigroot about 20km south of Kyeburn.
At least half of the track is above 600m and the section you are most likely to get stuck on is above 1200m, so even if you are doing it as a day trip you should take extra food and warm clothing, and check an upn to date weather forecast before heading off. Snow puts the section beyong scoutt hill off-limits from anzac weekenf to as late as early november. At any time of the year, the route is best down north to south, son that the steep zigzag section of the track on the southern side of mt Obi is done at a descent, and not a climb.
Dunrobin road crosses private land, and permission is needed before setting off, Check accesswith Mt dasher station (03 432 4085). A charge per vehicle is likely, Mt dasher station has accomidation available, at the homestead (bed and breakfast), in shearers quaters or at red hut, near scout hill.

Track conditons: From the northen end - ie Oamaru - the first 24km of the route is suitable for a 4WD car. The middle section - from Scout hill in the north to the southern side of mt obi - is rough, rutted and rocky, with boggy patches and steep climbs and descents

Another track nearby takes you from near kurow up onto danseys pass nr the top. sposed to be quite tricky in places. Have got one of the farmers numbers somewhere.

its fine to do the trip on the 29th, cost is $20 per vehicle, max of 5 trucks, so 4 places left, told the owner be around lunchtime, track takes about 3 and a half hours, could start track earlier if wanted. My plan is to head over to naseby after that.

id say minimum requirements would be tow hooks, couple of strops, and some good a/t tyres or M/T, discoblue made it through on some pretty bald 33s without a tow. OH and GOOD brakes for the zig zag, its the only dodgy part on the track
