A little more progress, might not look like much but it was very time consuming and had to be done, if anyone ever asks me to fit a rear wheel carrier and door to a surf that doesn't come out with one.....the answer is no :x
The tyre was underneath on mine and needed shifting to inside or rear tailgate, I went for the latter this time as the wheel inside is better for offroading but takes up to much valueable room.
All sorted now but it's no small job, 2 days work, which also included moving the wheel up 5inches on the carrier to allow for clearance of road, fitting tinted rear window, tinted side windows (from Adams old surf), and changing the barrel in the lock, all stuff that takes a fair bit of time
Happy with the result though.

Can you give some more info on what is involved inchanging to a rear wheel carrier (that takes the time) What is missing that needs strengthened? I guess the captured nuts etc are missing?

Would it have been easyer to have the rear wheel pivot on a bullbar if you were going to do something again?
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

Time is in making internals (backing plates) the right shape as it is a rounded surface (both ways, up down is slightly rounded as well as left and right) so not easy if you want a good job that supports the weight of a bigger heavier rim and tyre that will successfully support when tailgate opened, then getting them in there  ..... Mission :o

Off till Friday now so should be some real progress on front winch bar 8)

I know what you mean as I had a good ol' 40 to use (Dad owned it) but i loved it and used/abused it for years :D
It had the dual rear doors and clipped in when closed, the surfs are similar, it's when it's open that could be a problem if not successfully supported.

A bit more progress,
Got one of these.....
Image

Going to marry the top half of this to it
Image

Progress so far included a little massaging with cut off wheel of the Surf bodywork at the front to make the TG winch plate fit, A bit of the same treatment to the grill to fit the winch in, chopped the top half off the bull bar and found it to wide so chopped and narrowed it 150mm, will get a bottom bar bent up in the next day or so, shorten those chopped off bits, bend up a couple of hoops for the underneath/indicators and slap it all together.

hosehustler wrote:They fit straight in, you have to release the two links on either side when fitting (one side at a time) to get them in.
instant 3-4 inch lift (you will need longer rear shocks)..... just sussing out some 80 series shocks I think those will give the required length too
will make a post in the next few days
cheers
Tim

Scored a pair of aftermarket Koni's out of an 80 series, they were 40mm longer the old man emu 2 inch surf lift shock, that makes them damn near perfect and at the price of free i'm happy 8)
and yes they bolt straight in as well

Hi Tim
I would be tempted to tailor make your own mounting for the callipers . By doing this you could mount them a little higher up than mine. I was restricted by the leaf springs to make the handbrake cable work but because you have coils you could be higher up.
1 You can use the backing plate of your existing brake as the template for the holes and mark on a piece of paper
2 Get a rotor and fit the calipher over it and this gives you the radius of the 2 bolt holes and with a protractor mark these on your paper.

I would hold a calliper roughly in place to see where the handbrake cable would best work and then drill the 4 holes to suit.

I tried to measure my mount and think it is made of 16mm plate and it uses countersunk cap screws to mount it.

I also cut my existing backing plate and cut it to let the callipers fit and welded it to the new mounting. The advantage of this is to stop excess water off the road on a wet day getting on the pads and making the brakes less effective.

Cheers Richard

PS Before pulling the rear axles out measure the end float with a dial gauge and then you can make the right size shims to fit against the bearing. I have reduced mine to about 10 thou. If you dont do this you will have a soft pedal

Cheers Richard,
think i'll do that but with MR2 callipers and brand new rotors off a 70 series(a rear disc model) they fit over the hub and end of axle without any mods, the callipers are toyota, pads make full contact with rotor, and it's worth spending the time to get it right.
get Fitzy to do he mounts if poss

Bit more progress,
Rebuilt a diff for the rear today brand new 4.88 R&P bearings seals, and took me 3hr to shim up but all blued in perfect
just awaiting the locker but from what i'm told it's less that a week away.
sorted a few MR2 parts for the rear disc conversion as well :P
Trivial things have included replacement seats and a set of extreme safari seat covers, ever since went to Haast with Al I wanted a set of them, we also have them on one of the fire trucks at work, they aren't cheap but available from Ripco at about $100 retail....I payed a bit less 8)

On another note, I'm going to try something with the handbrake that I don't think anyone has, I believe the problems all have been having with handbrake when changing to rear discs (regaudless of Subaru, Mitsi, or otherwise) Is that we have all been trying to use the original Hilux cable set up all the way to the callipers.
What I intend to experiment with is using the MR2 cables through to full length and centre to the balancer (where they would normally be) and then re-routing the hilux cable from drivers side chassis rail, to center to meet up at that point with MR2 setup, I'm picking that may cure the leverage issue and retain original handbrake position, which means interior especially around center consul remains unchanged.

Hi Tim

One of the big disadvantages of using the original cable is that it is on the underside of the cab and exposed to all the shit and water that works its way into the cables and makes them hard to work. That is why I fitted mine completely on the inside of the truck to stop that happening.
The cable also stays in a direct line to the brakes instead of going forward and then having to do a complete turn to head back to the brakes.

Cheers Richard

I'm hearing you and thinking the same, however there is no reason why the main cable can't (and the intention is to......) come back inside, little I can do about the right turn at the firewall, but time will tell with that one

correct me if i'm wrong but would that setup would be the same as what the 2wd hilux's use? how do the surfs run their two cables into one setup, which would be on your truck now?

Well small confession to make, even though I'd pulled my axle out it's been a little while since I had a good look at the surf set up, and been involved with Pete's disc conversion on the 40, Dads setup on his doublecab, and my old truck, and they all have the old cable setup down the drivers side and does the 90degree across the rear diff.....
look under the surf and "Oh yeah  ", The later Surfs already have the dual cable setup
That saves alot of work
Sorry for the confusion, my mistake... but on the bright side I will be trying the Surf dual cable setup :!: :!:
