Getting a little sick of the crap auto choke on my DD (1997 courier 2wd extra cab petrol 2.3l manual). first thing in the morning it hesitates real bad when you put your foot down and sometimes stalls. Had a few close calls where I pull out in traffic and it dies halfway - so far no worries but I've had enough scares for now. Everynow and again it does it when warm also. Of course the bonus will hopefull be better fuel consumption, power, etc.
Is there a comparable engine (mazda/ford) that is EFI that I could bolt the bits on and plug in to get rid of this problem? Apparently this engine is a mazda 626 motor, not a ford one but I cant confim that. The mechanics who worked on it last time had a shit of a time getting parts.

Dosent say anywhere visible just a 6 digit number (didnt have a pen so didnt worry about remembering it) It has a 12 valve head and is a 2.3. I know not much to go on but its all I got at the moment. Might go to ford and see if they can pull up the details from the chassis number.
Re: ford courier petrol 2.3 carb to efi
Asked a ford parts supplier online about an engine for the 2.3 courier (97) and he told me they never made a courier with a 2.3, they only came out as a 2.2 and a 2.6. I then told him Mazda made b2300's which ford rebadged as couriers in NZ and Aussie with the 2.3 engine until they released the ranger here. I am still waiting for a response.
I see the 2.3s mazdas are EFI. How hard to efi a carb engine? Do I need the whole loom or just the engine part of it? Is it possible to run it without changing looms just piggy back the loom (I cant be bothered with the hassle or expence or a full rewire/reloom)?
I wonder if the engine in mine has been replaced already (has a 2.2 on the cam belt cover) but was sold to me as a 2.3. Man I am sick of chasing my tail on this, now I dont know what I have.

Re: ford courier petrol 2.3 carb to efi
thats what i thought as well as i havnt seen a 2.3 either. have a look on the block and there will be a code cast in which will tell you if it is 2.2 /2.3, other wise get your carb checked , even the efi motors eat fuel, at firestone i had a 2.6 inj courier and it used more fuel than the 4l inj falcon it replaced,

Havent checked the vehicle yet (parked up on the road) but have done a check on line and in the pile of paper here for the purchase agreement and low and behold...
99.999999% sure it's a 2.2.
Bugger me all this time I was lead to believe it was a 2.3, where I got that idea from now I dont know.
The blasted interweb eh and all its nonsense about couriers being rebadged b2300's in NZ.
I dont half feel like a twat at the moment. Still I'll check the engine as it may have been changed but there is no record of it changing.
Makes getting bits easier now I am looking for the right engine.

Re: ford courier petrol 2.3 carb to efi
Bought a ranger/mazda b series haynes manual online this week. It covered all from 95-05. Well what a waste of $$$. It doesnt cover any of the NZ models (I had a sneaking suspiscion this was the case but wished for the best). All the 4 cyl models are 2.3 and 2.5. Typical we have a global market and we still get odd ball bits down here.
So if anyone wants to buy a haynes manual for a vehicle that doesnt exist in this part of the world I have one going cheap.
Never mind. I'll keep searching for options for the little 2.2 I have. I wonder if the mazda donks will just drop in and bolt up to the mounts and the gearbox. A few more horses would be nice. If the current 2.2 manifolds fit even better.
Just a queery, if I was to find a EFI engine that would drop in, what parts of the loom do I have to fit? Can I have the engine wired in on its own loom piggy backed off the carb one?
