Oil and thermostat type for commy 3.8 v6

Post by gimmemud »

Hi guys, noticed my temp is quite high with my new water temp gauge running at about 90 - 95 degrees celcius and was wondering what temp thermostat i should have in it? It's for a series 1 manual motor.
And also which oil should i use? i'm currently running 10w - 30. Gonna be pulling out the motor again in the next few days cause of my stoopid clutch and since the thermostat is right at the firewall thought i'd check that too.
Also gonna change the oil and filter cause it's done about 1000km's since i put it in now and you never know what the last owner was doing with it.
Cheers, Tim

Mine has new radiator too. Doesn't seem to mind that temp so guess i'll just leave it be. Cheers

the commies run 90-95 deg thermostats, and also a 20 lb radiator cap, if you run a lower pressure you can have issues with over heating, when i got my ecotec going it boiled driving up the hill, replaced the 15lb with a 20lb and never boiled again

I dunno if this is going to be helpfull, but here's some old skool Off Road thinking.

We do mainly low speed work, where the engine is reving, but the air flow over the radiator is minimal.

Water with Anti freeze and under pressure is good untill about 115 degrees?? (i think from memory)

If your engines peak operating temp is is 90 - 95, the road going thoughts are that you should leave it there for maximum efficiency.

As its off road, due to the minimal airflow, and the fact that you don't have a huge amount lee-way between its opperating temp and the boiling point, it may be better to get a thermostat that opens earlier.

The reason being is that once the engine starts to heat up, it is hard to bring that temp increase under control. Its easier to catch it early and by the thermostat opening earlier, and the thermo switch on the fan ( your gonna fit one eh :D ) operating earlier, you will stop that overheating when working hard on a hill climb or in a bog.

The reasoning is that if the thermostat opened at say 80 degrees, and the fan came in around that point with maybe 5degrees lag, you would have an extra 10 degrees worth "time" ( the time taken for the water to heat up by the extra 10 degrees) to bring the temperature back under control before it started to over heat and boil.

Thanks for the advice. Will go for the cooler thormostat option and see if that works. Don't think i'll bother with a thermo switch for the fan, but i'm gonna hook up a buzzer or a light so i know when it's not on.

Will have to check that radiator cap too cause i just got one from ripco when i realised that the radiator place didn't give me a new one

Oh yeah... and what oil should i use?
