A tad more progress, but after reading Jafa's cool shite i'm feeling slightly deflated :(
That's really one very cool build :D
did a bit more work on the winch bar and it's coming along well, also mounted up a good sized external transmission cooler, just the plumbing for that to go and that's another tick on the sheet.

mate, as you know we are building two completely different vehicles :D Yours will be a nice-mannered road going cumfy, quiet cruiser that will master most offroad stuff, mine will be a noisy, unpleasant to drive at speed, and definitely not for the family, trailer queen that will master almost everything offroad.........hopefully  gawd it better superior to my zook!
Carry on! looking good! show us the winch mount and bar :)

&*edit* and yours wont take 4 years to build!!
'85 Hilux crawler, 3rz, duals, 4.7's, 4.88's, ARB's, 30 spline Longfields, 6 stud SNR4x4 Histeer, Airshocks up front, coiled rear, 40" Iroks.
^^^this shite is all about to change....^^^

hi tim how did you go with mounting your hawse fairlead at the front, i ended up making the hole for the wire to travel through about 15mm wider that way i was able to still use the same mounting holes, cheers craig :D

Haven't mounted it yet :o
yours is looking 8)

Bit more progress on the rear disc canversion.
I was looking at fitting mr2 callipers to mine, last time I used mitsi gallant, saw these advertised and went this way instead.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =189387361
One thing that nearly all disc converions have done is use a solid axle front disc on the rear as the stud pattern fits over the wheel studs, there are 2 problems with that..... the first is that the hat part of the rotor isn't big enough to fit over the hub, so normally you turn down the hub in a lathe, 2nd problem is that the very end of the axle (on surf wide rear axles) is too big for the hole in the rotor, so you turn out the centre of the rotor a little in lathe so that it fits.
main problem with doing that is they are "custom only" parts and if on a trip say to the west coast and you break an axle, you can't just get a 2nd hand part and repair.
The prado rear disc rotors fit over the hub, are the right depth for callipers, and the hole in the centre fits over the axle end, however the hat part of the rotor is 20mm deeper, will let you know in a couple of days if the adapter plates will work, not too worried if they don't as i'll be using the rest of the stuff I bought and get a set of calliper holders laser cut to do the job, hoping to modify this set tho

and then the only thing you'll be able to lift will be a larger bottle of beer than the one you can lift now

it takes some time to heal a broken collar bone, been there dude. Just don't try and test it out at the end playing beach volleyball, coz then you go and dislocate your shoulder instead and get even more time off.

p.s. awesome to watch you fullas building ya truks so fast, great progress reading

keep it up dude

finally a bit of progress, allbeit a little strained and sore :o
Thank goodness for rattle guns
Both the diff heads now have lockers installed, the rear diff has the "no-slip" which is just a little more technical to install than the standard lock-right I put in the front, but they're both easy installs, will sure be interesting to see what it's road manners are like, the US guys review and rate them highly so I hope I'm not disappointed :D
Completely stripped out the entire rear end, repainted, and reassembled, now sitting on springs and all back together ready to start setting up rear disc conversion over the next few days.

Oh i'm taking it easy, I took both diff heads in to Riks today, and set the backlash, got him to help me lift them in and out of my truck......see told you i'm taking it easy
fitted up the rear diff and started work on the disc conversion, short story is....there's no way the Subaru calliper will work with the Prado rear discs.....the Prado discs are the only ones that will work on the rear end without custom parts.....MR2 callipers will work with some new brackets (i'm pretty sure)
So tomorrow picking up a pair of MR2 callipers
Subaru callipers will work if I do the old turn down the axle hub and open out the rotor but the whole idea was no custom parts

Didn't think I was a nutta....but you know me well and you have a point
No it won't be for sale for a long time, getting really excited about the next year, there's some trips happening in places which I love :P

Decision made on rear brakes, it's the same set up you have on your 40 Pete :D
As stated earlier I wanted to avoid customising rotors and hubs this time and have bolt on parts.
Prado rear discs, MR2 (non-turbo) callipers, where the callipers are going to sit is a perfect spot which clears the rear coil springs, handbrake is in an excellent location to easily secure cables.
Will have to get a couple of brackets laser cut, so since i've cleared all that up in my mind and have a final plan, i'll put that job aside till the new year when the laser cutters have finished the festive season

Re: Hosehustler Replacement..... Coil SAS Surf

Post by hosehustler »

Progress is slow due to broken bone not healing together in line, means I am essentially one armed, sore as Fok, and painfully slow.......I hate it :x
I have managed to assemble the front end including the wide hub swap (will post some pics of that in a day or two), very happy with that, it all came together as planned.
here's a couple of shots, firstly of the rear disc conversion, this is the prado rear disc over top of Surf rear end, neither rotor or axle have been modified (except drum backing plate removed)
Image

have made a little more progress on the front bar, but still plenty of work there to go as well
