skippers canyon is unreal, deep in the valley, small bridge crossings, waterfalls, can spend a day there

You don't need to cross the Shotover to get to skippers. Its a pretty big river and the road only crosses it once on a swing bridge.

Macetown at that time of year you could go in by yourself with no problem, this crosses the Arrow river plenty of times.

Into Skippers is good, into Bullendale beyond there is great. Southland Club are in there 27th/28th Dec. Recommend a winch and/or diff locks for getting back out of Skippers Creek. Can also go right up the Shotover River to the front of Barnches Station.

Others are Macetown (fine on your own, lots of creek crossings) Nevis (a baby Macetown - but go through Carricktown on the way). Getting further to Alexandra way is the Pylon Road from Bannockburn to Clyde, Old Man Range, Waikaia Bush Road, Thompsons Gorge. Up the other way past Glenorchy is Rees River/Dart River/Paradise/Kinloch.
