Terrano speedo issues

Hi all,
Im just wondering if anybody has had an issue with the speedo shittin itself at the gearbox end? I have an 87 D21 2.7 5Speed and the fella I got it off reckoned the speedo cable had busted so I got a replacement,hooked it up (proper) and still no go.I pulled the dash out and went for a drive and the cable wasnt even moving :?
Both cables seem to be fine but im wondering about the bit the cable screws onto on the gearbox? is it a simple matter of unbolt and replace?

What's the platic spline like on the gearbox end, could be worn.

I dont have my wagon at home at the mo to have a decent enough look at it.If its not that plastic spline,do I need to drop the box to get into it? Im a noob so it will seem a bit of a hassle to do that just to get the poxy speedo going again :roll:
