The north shore huh? You might have to go park on the bonnets of all the little jap pocket rockets in supermarket carparks up there... Not much in the way of 4WDing in Auckland at all from what I can make out... you either fit 38" muddies and go get stuck in thompsons track or you move to Christchurch :)

Anyway, I'm sure someone from up that way will give you a more useful answer - but welcome to the board.

Bugger all places to go if you dont belong to a club. If you are just wanting to try out you can go here

http://www.extreme4wd.co.nz/

Is about $95/day to play. Lots of different terrain to play on. Failing that you would be best to join a club. Nearest to you would be Shore 4 wheelers. Heath on this board is a member and can pass on details (assuming he see's this thread)

There are about 6 or 7 seven clubs throughout Auckland so one of them should be what you are after.

cheers

Join either the Shore club or the Norwest club. Shore club has mtgs ever third wed of month at Taharoto rd scout hall (730pm ish) sorry not sure of Nor west (Scott whats the deal there?). Shore club is this Wed night (AGM followedby normal mtg) if you are interested in popping along for a look.

Most places that were a free for all have been so badly abused that they no longer exist and only organised groups (clubs etc) can get access (if we are really lucky). Clubs tend to have "play areas" set up with landowners in the Auckland area.

Insurance and liability seem to be the buzz words flying around now a days, so a club would be best place to start with. They also organise trips out of Auckland (Ruapehu area etc) everynow and then. It is becoming more comon for different clubs to band together on runs for mutual enjoyment and track maintenace also.

Yea you've got Muriwai obviously, you can head to Poutu up Dargaville way about 2 hours to get there though, still a bit of fun. There used to be some good fire breaks 2 mins out of Orewa but the new motorway has cut straight thru the middle and is turning it it into a 4 lane highway (literally).

Theres also the Rodney club that you could look into if you wanted.

Thompson's Track - hate it (read love it  )
it's not actually a track but more of a series of deep bog holes with dry bits in between :?

Image

perhaps not the track for a beginner - do it on your second trip
