When will the carnage on my wallet end.
The starter motor totally shit its self last night at work. had to ge a tow start.
It seems that it fell apart inside. A circilp broke, one of the brushes is nackered and a wobbly bearing allowed the armature to contact the outside (sorry not sure of names - spinny bit touched the housing bit) and released all the blue smoke that makes these electrical things go. Bloody thing was just in getting a new solenoid fitted so now I'm down $200 for the last fix up and God knows what for this one. Got quoted roughly $400 for a new Hi torque starter so that will sting a bit.
I guess the up side is it should last for a long time seeing as its anew one and not recond sewcond hand (F###ing better last).

I think the one I ordered as a replacement was a 1.4kw model. ($300ish)
Half the size of the std, half the weight of std and twice the power. Have upgraded the power lead also so no more getting hot. Just got to get the courier to deliver it on time so I can drive home tomorow (I hate walking in the rain).

All done, 1.4kw beasty fitted and a sweet sounding thing it is too.
I pulled the old one to bits to see what had failed and it was as I was told. Thing is these faults should've been noticed when the starter was out 10 days ago and having a new solenoid fitted. The bushes were tottally flogged out and the end play on the shaft was huge. The bearing in the nose was floating around without any grease or balls left and the circlip was missing completely (doesnt look like it's been there for a while as the shaft showed no signs of it in the rust and corrosion). The internals have been making contact for some time by the looks of it so its number was due to come up and one of the brushes was totaly wrecked (the bit the brushes run on was worn out also).
How could someone miss this? Poor underskilled apprentice maybe - dont know.
I wont be going back there any more.

it seems that now there is aproblem with the alternator (getting rebuilt next week) brushes or something like that. Noticed last night that there was a clunking noise comming from the voltage regulator. Popped into a sparky shop today and they found that the alternator wasnt charging gave it a tap and wriggled some wires and away it went. Sparky suggested that the brushes not contacting properly was causing something (field watsit) in the voltage reg to open and close causing the clunking noise. The volt meter would pulse also with the clunks (up to 15 volts (then clunk) and drop back then rise to 15, clunk...etc).
When it was clunking if I turned on the lights and put a load on the leckky system it dropped to about 13v and stayed there.
Any other suggestions as to what might be wrong in chevota land?
Should I look at a new regulator also?
Id torch the damn thing if petrol wasnt so bloody expensive (nah just kidding, too much time invested now to give up).

Personally... I'd get a Japper internally regulated alternator, and throw the Chev one a looong way away... then just make some appropriate bracketry... No more external reg, no more yankee electric bits... easy and cheap to replace if neccessary.

it has got the std hilux one cobbled in on top and the std regulator fitted, but yes a one stop jobbie would be good. Maybe I should check for a bigger modern one anyway (lots of lights fitted now) with all the bells, just the hassle of fitting it up.
God knows what this will cost me.

I guess it does run on LPG so its not like I have to spend all my wages on petrol, so why not spend it on something else vehicle related.
