1 Rated Recovery Hooks front & rear
2 Snatch Straps, First Aid, Fire extinguisher
3 Snorkel
4Side protection bars to protect your doors sills & side panels
5 Front bar with mounts for winch
6 rear bar
7 winch o

If the vehicle you buy has crap tyres youll most likely put that in the list somewhere near the top

Chromoly axles and cv's.(longfields). Good boots, traction aids, good bar work (sill sliders/side bars at a minimum), and rated recovery points. Snorkel is almost a must in NZ (especially in sth isalnd where we have lots of braided rivers).
I don't see the point in spending money on expensive recovery aids (which invariably are used more to rescue others) when you can spend that cash on making your rig perform better and go further in the first instance.
Once you have done all that, then start looking into the other gear.

Depends on how often you head out alone, I'd sooner have a winch over a difflock, difflock will get me further, so when I get stuck, I'm really stuck.

X2... the option of self-recovery is of paramount importance if going anywhere on your own. All the diff-locks and fancy other bits don't count for squat if you're stuck! No-brainer really. Even if going out with others, at least your own snatch and other ropes so you aren't relying on others equipment.

Has no-one mentioned a hand winch?

I don't have one either. But garage ornaments don't need them. :D

If you are going anywhere on your own, the chances of it being a difficult trip are greatly reduced. And if not, then yes, self recovery options are more than valid. But I would suggest that if you are solo traveling in grade 4 plus terrain on your own, that an electric winch is more likely to let you down than a manual one as suggested by Kiwi. And yes, a $150 Hilft and some chain would probably be (and is) my pick.
And to my way of thought, the no brainer is the idiot who attempts to travel (knowing that he is on tracks that are beyond his capability), alone.

Don't have to be alone, that was an example, what if you are in a group, and you all went for the "get me further mods" and limited recovery gear? You don't need to do a grade 4 trip to get stuck either.
I guess some people are into the diff locks so they can get as far as they can, where others would rather have an all round vehicle that can still recover themselves or others if needed

Ah... there are a lot of people in NZ that go it alone for a living and/or for recreation... all is a calculated risk but not everyone is up for the calculations and not everyone seeks the security of going on 'graded' tracks with others... agreed though, if you go alone unprepared and unskilled, no matter what the 'grade', the greater share of the idiot factor to whosoever...

Hi There in the north isl apart from the standard recovery stuff that has been mentioned
#1 good tryes as big as you can afford as well as get under your truck
#2 a good winch dont matter what it is as long as you have a pully block and a extention then majority of winches will get you out the the poo if you take your time 8)
#3 diff lockers, yes they do get you in the sh---t at times but they can also get you out of the crap as well. you will need to change your driving style a bit when using lockers thou :o 8)
#4 snorkle majority of northern stuff is that boggey that a snorkle wont be as nesercery as in the south isl

cheers and good luck :D

How much do you want to spend?

1) You can buy a very well setup offroader with lockers, bars etc here for about 3000 pounds, cheaper than building and all you do is fix the niggly little things (if any)
2) Hilux Surf or ute? 2 or 4 door Ute?
3) What sort of offroading do you want to do?

Personally I would look at the for sale in this forum and look at Trademe.co.nz (NZ Ebay) and see what you can get here, as far as a standard hilux you would have to look at the following

Hilux Surf:
Look at Hosehustlers build http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=13066
A mate is looking into doing the exact same build on his surf (he was in a lot of trouble last time when he driped oil all through the garage of her house) he only goes mountainbiking, but busts them when he has to get accross rivers or to where someone is injured or broken something (larger tyres, heavy foot, no traction aids doesn't help as it tends to have to be driven hard) it is driven hard to stop the IFS front from tipping it in some situations more up travel than down.

Hilux:
Go for a Model with a Solid front, then replace the gearbox crossmember, tyres, small lift and get some under body protection. You can go as far as you want really http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7160

I have a Hilux but after seeing Tim's (Hosehustlers) build (comfy seats) am tempted to do something similar but have mine to do and my brothers (if he spits out another IFS diff), but I like having the tray and not needing a trailer.
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

id definately go with a solid front axel model either pickup 2 dr or 4runner although ill bring my axels just in case i need em. as for the type of off roading im the type wholl try anything. over here we get plenty of mud, deep water , slopes etc. havent had the chance to try deep snow or rock crawling as we dont realy have that enviroment here. ive checked out some of the build on here and have to say im impressed the overall quality and spec of the builds is top notch

And what can start out as a warm winters morning on a grade two track, can quickly become and grade 4-5 track with snow closing in. I had a hand winch for years before I bought a truck with an electric winch, which I might add I have stuffed  .
