That must be one insane carpark if you managed to stuff the clutch in it (see removed inspection plate sitting on driveway).

Looks like there's plenty of room to clean it (if it ever gets dirty).

I'll be putting some heat rap around the pipes exiting from the sandwich block. They are pretty close to the headers.

Hi Pete
Where did you get your oil cooler from and how dear was it? Thinking of fitting one to the hilux.

Cheers Richard

Hi Richard.

I brought the oil cooler through Silvester V8 Performance here in Chch at a cost of $140.

Looks like a good spot. Only coz I often have 4 kids seat belted in the back it wouldn't work for me.

Thursday I'm getting the oil cooler tray modified. Hoping to get more oil cooler visable and more room for the hot air to escape. Often on my truck there's a mark II or even mark III (re the extractors).

Well. The mark 2 oil cooler tray and bash plates are made up.

First we had to make more room for the hot air to escape. So more steel was removed. I did have a removable front tow bar. Most of the extra steel was for that.

The mark 1 oil tray was made of 3mm alloy tread plate. If that did take a hit it was sure to ram the cooler up into the bull bar damaging it.
The oil cooler is still mounted on 3mm plate. But a 6mm plate was made up and mounted in front of it. It's screwed to the front of the bull bar. The rear of the 6mm plate is mounted to 10mm steel sections bolted to the under side of the winch plate. This should handle any real hard hits before it touches the oil cooler. Wire mesh was made up stopping any smaller stones from hitting it.

Last thing.
After the sandwich block was installed between the oil filter and sump for the plumbing of the cooler. It lowered the filter 45mm. So I had 6mm tread plate made up protecting that. That's bolted to the side of the chassis rail. Front and rear sections were welded up on 90 degree angles each end giving it some strength from hits. It's pretty solid.

Now the cooling of the LS1 is pretty much sorted. There isn't a lot more I want to do to my truck.
This year I've spent a fair amount of coin getting it to where it is now.
It's come along way from the days when I first got it back from the re-power. What a mess it was in then. Little did I know. Some would say , "you still know fark all Pete!". And I'd agree with em. But one thing is for sure. I've learnt a great deal with this FJ40. And I'll keep on leaning. Just not sure I want to do any more mods.

It's been fun though.

Cheers for the comments and help along the way.
Merry xmas to all of you!!!

Pete.

It does look good aye Tim. I haven't put it through it's paces yet but I'd say it would cool better and be stronger than the mark 1 model...
Full credit to Hayden at Thorpe Engineering here in Chch. He was the one who came up with the idea of a separate bash plate for the cooler. He goes the extra mile for ya that guy. But hey, he did work with a V8 super car team in Aussy for a few years. So he has a few clues. He also brought up a couple of other issues while he was under the cruiser. Nothing major. But it shows he has an eye for detail..

That's ... unbelievable ... only in america! See the two utes parked as she drove by with their horns also. One of them had 8 horns there, that's insane. Slightly cool in a redneck kind of way but still insane.
