88 Surf auto to manual hub conversion

Well this looks like a pretty straight forward job. I have a nice new set of manual hubs, all the washers and nuts etc and all the necessary tools except a 54mm socket to un/do the large nuts.

I have a wrench that will go this big but how do I set the torque correctly on these nuts without a socket that I can attach to my torque wrench?

Has anyone else done this and if so how did they set the torque correctly?

At the risk of sounding a bit bush-fab... use a flat blade screwdriver like everyone else does :)

Just use it with a hammer to gently tap the first one undone (fold the star washer tabs away first) then remove the star washer then the second nut.

Do them up as hard as you can by hand, then rock the wheel top and bottom to see if there is any movement. Tap the nuts around until most/all ove the movement is gone then star washer on, then top nut tight on top, then folt one tab in, one out. re-check wheel bearing play by rocking the wheel holding it top and bottom (not left to right, that will only move the steering). If there is no movement and the wheel can freely spin then it shoud be all good.

Gash, huh? :lol: But it works. I'm sure my tech manual has the correct torque settings, but I haven't got that handy.

Thanks Steve.

The correct torque settings are 20 for the inner nut and 58 lbs for the outer which is what had me worried about doing this by hand.

I don't know why the two nuts have different torque settings so I was a bit apprehensive about doing this by feel.

I just bought one of those big sockets (It's neat) :D and I played with it for hours with a spare nut I've got. I couldn't believe I finally got one after years of screwdriver, cold chisel, poly-grips.

Now I hope I dont have to use it :roll:

I'll start saving up for a torgue wrench now- should be able to get one in about 15yrs time :wink:

Just another way to do this topic , do up the 1st nut fermly, turn the hub a couple of revs, to displace any grease also settles the bearing,undo the 1st nut 1/12 of a turn, fit locking washer, then fit 2nd nut and touque to approx 50 to 60 ft/lbs, then fold the tab washer outwards.
Works for me evertime.

Me again, assuming its the same as L/C , the 1st nut is touqued to 48 in -lbs ( NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ft-lbs) the 2nd nut is touqued to 47 ft-lbs.

The first one is to set the bearing preload, the second one is just tightening against the first one to lock them, hence the higher torque needed.

Updated: Done, took about an hour 45 all up, second one was very quick. Thanks for the help.
