easter weekend 2006

Post by mercutio »

i decided to run an experiment this weekend last timei was supermarket shopping i bought 3 litres of fresh cheap cooking oil.

i did a bit more research last night and found out that mercedes diesel engines should be able to start when cold on straight cooking oil unlike most other diesel engines

so today i disconnected the feed and return lines from the tank and put them into my bottle of basics cooking oil and i started it no worries at all even drove it around the block no noticeable power loss but it does smell funny

i must admit then engine was warm and i didn't bleed the engine so it would have been starting on diesel so turned it off and i will leave it over night to see if it starts in the morning

this is where i found out about mercedes diesels being able to start on cooking oil

well i get the impression you can start most diesels on vegetable oil but the injector pumps don't like it and eventually die

errrr not exactly ... start on diesel then change to cooking oil and just before shutting down change back to diesel.Just like CNG. As for pumps, Lucas ( princes of darkness) and CAV types, die using oil instead of diesel all other types no problems
ops weekends achevements ( keeping within this thread) went to work, came home, went to sleep .. went to work, came home, went to sleep..........

well i was chatting to my old man about this yesterday afternoon and we were discussing filtration and he said i could use the gulf coast filter he used to use on his roadsweeper it uses a paper towel roll and filters down to 0.7 of a micron so that should get most of the rubbish and it is rather large so should work as a water trap as well it is designed to handle bypass pressure so using it as a fuel filter may be a little bit of over kill but i figure better to be safe than sorry i'll probably have to put an electric pump in though to help push it through

I still dont undertand why you cant mix 1/2 a tank oil and 1/2 diesel??
I know of a guy who mixes the oil with some alcohol and has no problems, starting up or running!!! the only down fall is smelling like a fish and chip shop!!!!

oh yeah i forgot to mention i got my spare engine on saturday the only reason i bought this one as well is it has a turbo so i'll bolt that and the injector pump onto my wagon sometime in th near future

and last night while i was contemplating life the universe and everything i realised the spare motor still has the power steering pump on it hmm maybe i could use it to drive a hydraulic winch me thinks

On friday I helped reroof the mother in law's house and put in a skylight in the lounge with 3 of my brother inlaw's.

Saturday was chores day, lawns, edges etc.

Sunday was relaxing day, motorsport in the afternoon.

Today I fitted the manual hubs to my Surf thanks to those who responded to my thread yesterday!

Matt.

changed shitty nappy then bought home hilux running gear from work, changed another shitty nappy and dropped of Simex's to mates tyre shop to get removed off some dirty ole Jeep rims. For something else to do I changed a shitty nappy and put a few things on trademe to fund other bits I want to buy. While changing another shitty nappy (and talking to Chris - but not at same time  ) I/we decide that Lil Pig shall go down the rover running gear path instead of hilux..... Oh the joys of daydreaming about 4wding

Yeap, We've done alot of work up there and spent quite a few dollars. All through many hours of co-operation and meetings with doc.

Guiding a couple of Auckland clubs around there next w/end.

Happy to do a ORE trip end of May/June if a few put their hands up to go (I normally know if a club group is going to be around on a weekend so can get a quieter day,w/end to suit)

umm friday... had a cool little get together at my house. good turn out, and we all managed to get pissed even though it was good friday and you couldnt buy it anywhere (lol that is an achievement in itself!)..

saturday... played singstar, drank wine, went to catalyst and danced to techno. achievement for that night was getting into a club.. even though it was gay. then stayed the night at my hot hot friends house (another achievement).

Sunday.. recovered.

weekend in north block

Post by TeLexs »

Just had the weekend out in north block with the Taupo club . Went out friday , left Taupo 8.30 am bit of a hall out there loaded up with fuel (before the price went up again) made camp in the new spot , Doc have put aside for 4wds . Very nice view over the 4wd area . Stayed one night had a ball . There is some good tracks out there that loop back on to others and some good mud holes . Nice to have a new place to play and thanks to all involved in getting the access opened to 4wds
Does any one know if the track goes right throught to the Hamilton side if you get across the river where the bridge once was .

It used to go out to the old Ngaroma mill years ago, but there is a farmer at the other end that has denied all access to everyone for years and we are ok with the access from the bottom end cause it's central to other areas and accommodation in the park. Doc didn't want us to stir him up anymore either (which kind of sounds like they have had their moments with him too) Oh and Doc wont allow any vehicles in rivers at Pureora - its one of their biggest no no ' s and the best way to get up their nose (just so everyone knows to be carefull with that)

Glad you found it good :)

Yeah, i thought i recognised that SAS'd Surf i passed in the opposite direction, on that hill up onto the plateau on the Desert Road!!

Had been round the other side of the mountian looking for any interesting places in the Erua Forest . We were heading up towards the Tukino (sp?)ski access co's i heard there was a way to sneak round the gate (which there was) and then onto the Tongariro River from there. ;)

I only clicked who you were as you passed lol
