Stall or lacks power

Post by Dutch89 »

I have been having a problem for some time now with my Escudo 1992 1600 EFI. When i drop the front wheels into water or mud some times it looses all power. Its like the exhaust is blocked, but the back end is not in the water of mud yet. I'm guessing it may have something to do with the oxygen sensor (but this has been replaced) Are there any breathers under the front end that may block when we drop into water etc... problem is its not happening all the time - only when i need the power it dies.

Should the oxygen sensor be water proofed where is connects below manifold??

It's not just a wet dizzy is it? Mine used to do it all the time. It dosen't take much water to get it wet either

No dizzy is good, i sealed it up but allow it to breathe to save getting condensation. Did a good job on spark plug leads as well. I'm not hitting water or mud fast enough to blow it all over the engine anyway, i tend to ease in and then give it a few reves - And it can almost stall before i give it a few herbs. and besides it has a 2 inch body and a 2 inch suspension lift so its not like it low to the ground, and holes aren't even that deep at times. But in saying that i have been in very deep water holes and have had no problem. weird

gotta agree with bubba on this my mums vitara did the same and it was the dizzy getting damp from water sprayed up by the fan. we cut the finger and thumb tips of a surgical glove and cable/zip tied it round the dizzy with the lead through the fingers cable tied too.didnt do it after that :D the only other thing i could think of is a dodgy earth from the engine to the chassie but that would more that likely just kill the engine or the sencor connector getting damp.

May have to go see the sparkey again, its been in 3 times to find out what is causing the stall, engine recovers when i push the clutch in and then goes fine, even after the bog gets deeper. Mainly seems to be the initial stage of entry that it hates.

is it a water issue ?or does it die and splutter when the nose drops down?,could be a dodgy fuel pick up or something , the oxy sensor in the exh wont affect it , mine has not had it since i put my extractors on years ago, i have never had trouble with water with mine and all i do is spray dry glide on and i have had the bow wave over the bonnet and roll up the screen  , mine had a intermittant miss that used to come and go for no real reason and in the end i put a new cap and rotor on and it seemed to fix it,f###ing annoying when they do miss .

Don't think its a water issue, put the garden hose on dizzy and oxygen sensor yesterday - really pumped water into it and nothing happened. It a strange thing it does - not a miss, more like a splutter i guess. Had it in real deep water and seems fine (even floating the Zuk in deep holes) deep mud seems the problem when nose drops into holes. Someone suggested an earth problem, don't know where the earth strap is - but i would expect this to be worse when i go play in the water!

Is there a engine breather somewhere that may get blocked! I'm thinking most problems are of the electrical kind that are hard to find

Cheers for the feed back

Earth on the rear of the starter motor/ gear box to the battery a short body earth from the - terminal on battery to the firewall. earths inside on both sides of foot wells.

Can you replicate the fault dropping off a bump or is it just water.

If it is just when you add water I would guess an earth fault (start with the main engine earth and work back). Remove the earth lead, wire brush it and the mounting surface (Its a PITA to get to). Maybe when the engine is running wiggle the earths and see what happens (might be a faulty lead).

Is it an alternator fault with the alternator loading up suddenly and almost stalling the engine? Check the alternator leads also (maybe get the alternator output checked too).

Okay I've used my allocated guesses for now.

Keep us posted.

Wouldn't it be something to do with the clutch then??
I would assume if it was an electrical or fuel problem it would happen even with the clutch in?
