Tyre size.............

Post by lilpigzuk »

The never ending saga..........

Having thoughts for my off road set for the Rangie
Is an early Rangie and I have my sights on Simex centepede's" (have used or seen the others and Im not interested)

Issues.........
Will/has a 2" susp lift, no body lift, ARB locker in the rear. Guards are all dented so quite happy to hack them to fit a bigger tyre. Rangies reknown for weak axles etc. Bigger the footprint more traction - more likely to break something.

Now for soft option go 32 x 9.5 x 15. little body mods, only 1.5"diff clearence difference from a 35" (without taking physical diameter measurement into account as written size varies to actual size)

2nd option 33 x 10.5 x 15, down to 1" less diff clearence to a 35 but the bigger footprint is more stress on drive train.

35" not really going to consider unless the 6 lotto balls shine down on me so I can afford maxi drives..........

May sound trivial to some and others will say buy a Nissan/hilux, but Im interesed in different opinions as Im sticking with this particular heap for now.

Is going to be used for safari's/club competitions for now.........a year or two down the track it will hopefully make a transition to fully blown winch challenge truck but until then it is a daily driver and weekend toy

I await your thoughts/smart arse comments :D

cheers

Hey Rex

I luv my 35's
I don't know if they would fit with out the body lift, and you will have to cut the guards.

The 33's might even rub a bit. With a bit of dealing the 35's are not much more than the 33's (if you have a real friendly tyre dealer)

If you don't go nuts on the go pedal (yea right) the drive line will hack it.
With 35's your gearing is shot (mines an auto so I don't loose as much) and your speedo will under read by around 15kph. Plus you'll need to certifiy them.
My advice, go for the 35's right off, then you have a real good excuse to mod the rest

Yeah for 33" or 35" you will probably need more than 2" spring lift unless you are planning to limit you upward articulation severely.

My 34" fit comfortably with 2" Spring and 2" body - but there is not much room for error.

Apart from the lift it is important to get your wheel offset/backspacing sorted - standard rims will cause grief with big tyres no matter what lift.

Finally my opinion is to think big. You know what you want your truck to be like at the end of the process and I believe its best to spend that cash once only. Get the axles you know you are going to need then get your 35's. You could get the 35's now and break and replace axles but it wil end up costing more in the long run. You won't have the pleasure of running around on 35's in the meantime but its not that impressive snapping axles and CV's all the time - just means you are broken down on 35's...

At this point I would like to point out this is not the way that I did it. I got the tyres and the thought I would just replace stuff as I broke it. Problem was I couldn't afford to always upgrade to stronger gear so often I was breaking the same stuff. In retrospect it didn't seem very smart. If you are careful you CAN make it last but if you want to compete as stated you are going to need the stronger gear anyway - get it in the right order.

Underbody protection, Axles, lockers, lift, wheels, tyres

Good luck!

PS I am going to have a lot of stuff for sale soon  !!!!! [No stronger axles though  ]

Oh yeah - 10.5" is a good width for rangies it seems to suit their weight – with 9.5 you may find it bogs more easily as it will dig quicker. A 12.5 is getting on the wide side – much harder to fit under the guards [not impossible] and a lot of floatation for a rangie – great on the sand but can be a liability in the mud where you often need a bit of digging.

So 10.5 is good.

I agree with bodge, do it once and do it right, just thought you might be keen to hear an option
Some options instead of Maxidrive axles etc

Rear end
Find a series III landy dif head with the larger carrier bearings (bigger than 70mm) this will take a Salsbrey sized ARB locker (same price as normal locker, about $1600) Then put in double carbon salsbrey axles, the same as Sam Parkers Re-A-Range ($280), still looking into the drive shaft, I've found a company in Aus that make double carbon CV's that are very stong & cheap, I've been thinking along the same lines as bodge, there has to be a weak link somewhere, I've been toying with leaving the trans CV standard as its an easy fix and I'd rather it blow at that end 8O
Oh and the radius arm bushes  I think I've got that one sus, just got to talk to local certifiyer first, if it works no bush bind and no wear 8)

The Front
Bodge put me onto this :D
Hilux front diff (requires new mouts on the diff/axle housing) double carbon inner halfshafts, hilux universals and an aftermarket transition outer halfshaft (hilux-rover spline $200) and possably the same deal on the drive shaft, double carbon CV at the axle and standard CV at the trans

Another thing that I'm considdering is when I mount the lexus and the new trans, I'm going to try and mount them as far back as I can to lengthen the front drive shaft

Oh and bodge I'd be keen to see what you've got going as well  I think this could be a sellers market

Now that I can understand.

I to have a Lexus/Rangie project on the drawing board (design stage only). Very long term, but if it come's together I promise it will be radical
By the way I said the above very quite so not to many will hear

A new project. (very long term)
But don't worry the current toy is always getting new bits.
