Hilux/surf Gearbox

Post by mylux »

Hi all,
Bit of a problem :( :( :(
will a 5 speed gearbox out of a 88 surf(2l 2.4 Litre) fit a doublecab hilux(3l 2.8 litre)?
do you need to modify any thing?
will the electrics hook up?
Thanks in advance
Richard.

I have an 87 hilux for parts that has a Surf gearbox fitted.

Completely different gearbox .The gear-levers are in a different place and they are lighter than a hilux box. 5th gear very weak. I personally would not go there.

Cheers Richard

depends which surf greabox, if its a G52 don't bother, If its the W56 (out of the 80"s IFS surf) then its the good one.
HoweverIt also depends what year your double cab is, is it beam or IFS e.t.c

Beam axle surf LN/YN60 should have a g52 box, LN/YN61IFS Surf should have a W56.

so the "w56"will bolt straight in?
Are the gear leavers in the same place?
Any other mods required?
Thanks

On the manufacturers data tag in the engine bay, the transmission code will tell you.

You can swap G52 for W56, they bolt up but the transfer lever is further back on W56. To swap from G52 to W56 you need to move the hole in transmission tunnel back by approx 60-80mm, So your rubber boot won't fit unless you patch the front of the hole to match.
Would pay for you to check your hilux and see what box it has.
Will tell you on id tag under bonnet on firewall. G52, W56, R150 possibly
