202 starter motor

Post by callum007 »

ok. seems a stupid question, but i'm going to ask anyway.
I just changed my starter for a new one. the old had the big lug for the cable from the battery and a terminal for 12v from start switch.. the new one has an extra terminal.
I'm thinking it needs earth or 12v or something as the starter doesn't disengage when the truck starts and the start switch is let go..

a quick answer and no abuse for being dumb would be good....
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Can you post a pic of it ??

my first thought was an Earth for the solenoid but from your original post it sounds like it is actually working which it would not do if this was required.
Some have a link between one side of the solenoid and the incoming large connector from the battery and use a relay to earth the other side of the solenoid
Was it working when bench tested ??
if it's turning the motor over and just not retracting the solinoid may be sticking under load ...

put the positive lead from a meter on the terminal and the negative lead of the meter on a good earth and see if there's any voltage, if no voltage get someone to crank engine over, if you get voltage when cranking it's probably the connection to the far side of the ignition ballast resistor to provide more volts for starting. :)

It should be a ballast resistor feed so that the ballast has power during cranking but is isolated so that the coil can't back feed the starter.

Have you messed with the ignition wiring at all?

Pull the little connection from the starter and test the voltage at it with key on engine off and then in the start position and then again after attempting the start. It should read +12v when you attempt to crank and then 0v afterwards.

Matt.
