Just got a 10,000lb winch from winch.co.nz for on the Zuk (big enuff ya think?). Lol I figure I'll be able to do any pull single line, enough to pull out bigger trucks, and if I swap to bigger truck one day I can take it with me...
Anyway, on with story...I've got a 430cca starting battery in, not really any room in Vitara engine bay for dual battery system so keen to use an Optima Yellowtop (starting and deep cycle in one). But need some advice on if it will suffice:
Winch - 5.5hp/4.2kw motor drawing max of 300amp (motor current amps/lb's load - 80/0, 170/4000, 210/6000, 250/8000, 300/10,000)
I believe alternators on Vitara's are about 60amp?
Optima Yellow D51 (only one that will fit!) is 41amp/hr (at 20hr rate) and 51amp/hr (at 100hr rate), is 500cca and 800 ambient ca.
Would that battery and standard alternator suffice to run the winch?
Cheers,
Matt

Re: Power for winch
you may need to run another battery to power that, for long pulls
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered
Re: Power for winch
If you run it for long periods it might take quite a while to recharge the battery again off the stock alternator.
You will want to put in a battery isolator of some sort if you are going to run dual batteries. You can probably do an alternator upgrade, there is bound to be something larger that will fit with a bit of work.

Re: Power for winch
If you can find a promo paphlet for the yellow optimas it should give you the recharging time on the back of it,
For example a red to optima will recharge from dead flat to 90% charged in 35mins @ 100amps or 75mins @50 amps

Re: Power for winch
i managed to fit duel batteries into my samurai and im sure the vitara is bigger than the samurai's you might be able to move something from in the engine bay to make room or if that fails just put it in a battery box in the back this is what most people do as it also keeps centre of gravity down.just little to consider if u need help with duel batteries go to tool shed there is a good writeup there.

Re: Power for winch
found a site a while ago with stuff on fitting falcon alternators to the 1.6 zuk.
http://carl.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic16 ... alternator
has a few links in there also, might be a cheap alternative to a rewind etc.
advise from thread - the Bosch replacement will not fit. You need the Mitsubishi version, which is EL/EF.

Re: Power for winch
you can fit dual batteries in escudos i have dual batteries in mine. you just get a battery tray from a later escudo which has the big brake booster. Im not sure if all escudos have them but mine had the holes in the right place and the just bolts straight in.
Re: Power for winch
i did the falcon alternator swap on my 1.3 samurai motor was suposed to be all bolt in but when i got the part nothing bolted in was a major job getting it in hope this is not the case with the 1.6.

had a quick look at the thread. depending on the model alt and the manufacturer it is almost a bolt in swap with just some cable swapping to get it sorted.
Re: Power for winch
Thanks guys, will look into it further and check out both 2nd battery on passenger side by coolant bottle and falcon alternator too, it would be great to have a better alternator.
The Optima brochure didnt mention recharge times from memory, but researching elsewhere did sing the praises of AGM type batteries and how fast they charge.
