Hey Guys,
had really good day in the Totoara, done the Tailings track both ways and a couple of little loop tracks in between. Will have some pics and the vid of Jafa driving the steep hill when I get organised. Jafa gets the title of driving the steep hill first  but a small win with mine - first truck with Lsds to drive out of the Little Totoara to the skid site :D . Another ball joint broke for Jafa and a peirced transcooler line on mine other than that a great day out with Flag, Nuts and Steve coming as passengers.

Any vids showing parts of the tracks with all vehicles attempting it, just to see how far each one got?
Reason I ask is, what would be considered Jafa's main advantage with his setup over the others in being able to drive where he did (obviously its one hell of a truck)? Tyre size, suspension, driver, motor, or just a combination of all?

Hi Dave.
I would have been disappointed if he didn't out perform me.

The truck is a real credit to Jafa in its design and craftmanship and engineering to the highest quality . It is not just the truck but Jafa himself is a very good driver and can read the terrain well and knows what gear to be in and when to put power on etc.
In the Chasm I would say his main advantage would have been the tyres.

Because he understands how to drive he knows what is required in the design to make a truck that performs well.

Because Janet wasn't there, I don't have any video as a comparison because Jafa was behind me ,I had to go through and then ask Jafa to wait so I could film him and then we moved on.

All I will say is, we wern't in the running and didn't come close. But he also still got stuck on a few occasions.

Cheers Richard

This is a great big thank you from one ORE member to those who answered Jafas request for a West Coast trip. Having had the privilege of spending a day with the Jafa and his living piece of art in Canterbury last week I know how excited he was about spending a few days on the Coast seeing how we 4WD on that side of the island and I wouldn't mind betting that after this trip Rockrash010 won't be the only reason for a trip south next year and the modifications will already be planned for turning the vehicle into an even more capable all rounder. Once again thanks to all for showing Jafa some true West Coast hospitality and to Jafa for sharing his Mighty Toyota with us.

No problem, and my "out perform" comment was not to have a go at you, as the mods you have made yourself are a credit to you, I just haven't seen anything come close to yours in the vids, as it always looks so easy for the lux (not to take anything away from your driving skills either though).
Just would have been good to see vids of the 4 trucks of varying setups attempting the same areas to see what mods got who further, as its not often you can compare 4 trucks of the same type to get a real understanding of the beneifts of certain mods.

I was always led to believe that swb was superior, but given the chance, I would extend my wheelbase, and was always led to believe that hilux's were weak, but if they came on coils, I wouldn't hesitate in owning one (80's are too damn expensive for me, but I would own one at the right price)

I guess others feel the same when wheeling with you, as your setup and ongoing mods mean a lot wouldn't be in the running either.

Jafa may have put all the rock crawlers to shame, driven banks and hill climbs that we haven't, but I'm sure the highlight of his south Island trip would have to be in this video.

ive watched jafa's build threed on a few 4wd sites and you can see all the effort gone into it
everthing was modeled and you could see the prep and thought going into it
ive also read the bulletproof threed and so many well thought out mods there as well
personally i loved the spring over the rear diff .. how simple and yet very effective

good to see some vids of what well preped trucks with good drivers can do and achieve

cheers guys was a great read/watch and you didnt dissapoint

Jafa said I will try to crawl out of the chasm slowly. Didn't happen and ended up stuck on a log.

All these banks look easy but they are loose rocks and gravel.

Re think ,perhaps momentum is better.

When you are playing on high traction surfaces, you really do believe that the dual transfers can't be beaten. Sometimes though ( as you say) you get a reality check, and a bit bit of slipper (and higher range) is the only way to do it.
I am pleased that you guys showed Trev the coast tracks in all their glory, and I'm sure he had a ball :)

I don't know how the links were lost but most have been restored now.

I notice some of "The Bulletproof Hilux Spec's" links are also broken but we are probably better for it to die a natural death
