4wd high or 4wd low??

Post by Toymota2 »

Hey,

might seem like a dumb question but what ratio do you use when splashing around in the mud??
Im thinking 4wd "low" is for steep hills up and down or mud and 4wd "high" is just for getting from spot to spot??

I havent really seen the question asked anywhere so i feel kinda stupid not knowing the answer as all these other learner off roaders must know the answer  . Im fresh out of drift central and am looking for something new, im just more of a pull another gear or boot the clutch kinda person. 4wdriving seems a lot the same haha.

Thanks! P.S you can laugh if you want to  .

if your off road and just going from here to there and its not tight or steep then high box but if your negotating tricky stuff or crawling around the hills low box is the go, remember the aim is to not spin the wheels to give you max traction but boot the crap out of it when you really have to... but being careful not to damage tracks etc. the moto is tread lightly and leave no damage so others dont know you were there  .... unless its private land and your just doin skids on a mates farm etc, then its all on!!

whenever Im offroad I always leave it in low range. Theres no point really to changing ratios all the time. You cant do it on the fly (to change to low that is) and my 4th low is the fastest I really need to go when negotiating forestry tracks etc

I agree with Turoa.

I always stay in low range off road . The advantage of this is the gears are alot closer so you can easily move up or down to suit the terrain and have complete control at all times.

Normally I'm between 3rd to 4th low range .

depends on your box i guess and the terrain being traveled.

if im cruising over a farm to go somewhere ill use high box, 1st high is between 2nd and 3rd low ratio wise and i can happily stick it in 1st high and idle around pretty slow, low box is only used(in my truck) for doing tight tricky stuff or crawling.

depends on terrain and driver and vehicle a lot tho
