Fj40 Leaf Springs with Exteneded Shackles into a FJ70?

Post by Bubba »

My knowledge is limited on this subject so please beer  with me

My fj70 has crap travel (articulatioon) compared to a fj40 and it my understanding is because the leaf springs are shorter on a 70. I would like to get more travel while also spending sweet FA.

If the 40 has longer leafs why can't I replace the 70 pack (or at least some) with a 40 pack, with an extended anti inversion shackles. Has it been done? I would have thought if it was do-able it would be a cheap (if not slight) upgrade.

i dont know about the 70 springs being shorter than the 40 but i did put 60 series springs in my 40 which were a lot longer than the 40 springs and put much longer shackles on to take up the difference, this gave it a much softer ride and much more flex droop wise, compression was the same as it was still the same height so if the 40 springs are longer than the 70 springs i would say go for it.

did Jerry actually read your post? im sure it says in the you want to spend SFA... new EFS set??? what the hell??? even a mates rates off the back of the truck in the middle of the night wouldnt be SFA Jerry you TOOL!

Im interested to know how you get on with this idea. Keep us updated if you get a chance. If it works I might look into doing it myself. Seems feasible in theory yeah?

don't know about the front, but the rear 70 series are longer than the rear 40 series.
pins are in different places as well, further back on a 70.
ironman suspension has the specs of their springs on their website, so you can compare.

Can anyone tell me the lengths of the 40,60 and 70 main leafs?

The main downfall of the 70 is the front axel so fitting longer rear ones in the front would resolve this, however from what Whoop says, 60 springs are longer.

Do 60 springs fit 70's?

Just need to find me some scissor shackels now

Sooooo, if the 60's are the same as the 70's and the 60's are longer than the 40's that makes the 70's longer than 40's which dosen't explain why 40's have more flex than 70's except to factor in the other two points, old soft leafs and shocks.

The last two points I can't do much about on my budget at the moment

Apprently scissor arn't that hard to make.... Well actually I should say they are apparently not hard for SOME ONE esle to make.

POI: The rear ones should also have sideways flex but not the front ones. Screws with your road handling so I am told

This is a exercise in education and finding out what I can, should do as opposed to what I will do tomorrow. I know there is the stock standard way of doing things (longer shackles, longer shocks) but I always like to know "why do you do it this way?" and "why can't I do this other way?"
