I have been thinking over options on buying a new Toyota Surf, I am considering buying a older model, maybe even a 60-series for the solid front axle (although I could quite happily live with IFS). Although I would like/been thinking about putting in a more powerful engine something like the (1KZ-TE) 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine as found in newer surfs.
Because I have little mechanical experience I do not know how realistic such a change would be.... So would like same advice on it.
Firstly how much would such a change cost, including time? Also is the above engine a good choice. Or would i be better off buying a 130-series.

You could fit the 1KZ to any Surf without too much trouble but if you are happy with IFS then you would find that buying a later model 130 Surf with the engine already in it will be alot less grief and cheaper.
I fitted a 1KZ to my 1992 2LT Surf but that was when a 130 Surf was worth $10K plus. If you wanted to go down this path then you would need a complete engine,ecu and loom with the 1KZ so all the dash can be wired correctly. You can fit a 1KZ with only the engine but its a little more work to get the dash sorted.
Actually if you like the 1KZ and want solid axle it would still work out cheaper to chop the IFS and fit a solid axle than it would to buy a beam axle Surf and fit the 1KZ..

What Mike said... buy a 130-series with the 1KZ already fitted... then if you want the SAS just do it to that, you get a newer truck, 5 doors, nice engine factory fitted and a soild axle that way.
The other way would be more expensive and you'd have less to show for it.

Thanks for the advice.
Just thought it might have worked out slightly cheaper. I am very rough with the interiors (and the exterior) of my vehicles so the nice new looking 130 series would not be new looking for long.... I have a bad habit of spotting overgrown little tracks heading down into rivers and taking my car down them, and allowing dirty wet dogs to sleep inside which wrecks the interior. So I guess the better option is to wreck a newer Vehicles
Now I just need to find one.
