1KZ surf transformed to Coil SAS club truck

Been a bit quiet lately as I took a summer holiday camping with the family, loved it.
Have spent a little time in the garage over the past couple of days, finished off the transmission cooler, filled up the poweesteering and radiator then fired up the engine, bled the powersteer, all up to temp, no leaks....great and steering all works as planned.
Rock slider mounts all tacked up and body slightly attacked to accommodate the mounts.
Also finished up the design for the MR2 calliper brackets, they are going to use all 4 bolts around the bearing/axle retainer, they look like this;

Will get them cut ASAP, also sorting an adjustable rear panhard rod, hopefully truck fully mobile by the end of next week......fingers crossed, (and no bullrush )

That's MOBILE not finished, still plenty of bar bending to complete front and rear

Will get a price for ya, they are only suitable if you use prado rear discs as well, I did the design for coil sprung hilux, don't think the callipers will clash with the leaf springs, but you'll have no problem selling them on if they do

Hi there Tim,

If you can get a few brackets made up i would be interested also as Ive got the Prado disks and MR2 calipers but think i might have a few issues with the brackets i was given.

Some tech stuff and pics.

Firstly transmission cooler, radiator modified to 4core, shortened 50mm and trans cooler removed to stop trans cooler causing engine to overheat, Air cooler is about the size of an A4 sheet, but where to mount it where it gets airflow, up high out of the crap, has protection, doesnt' clash with the winch or aircon, soooooo carved out the back of the grill, mounted it as high as possiable then put in some air flow




Finished up the rock sliders



And finshed off the front hubs completely, they are prado swivel housings, prado discs/callipers, hilux stub axles, Wide IFS hubs, SNR4x4 rotor spacers/adaptors, Aisin manual FWHubs.
The result, a front end that's 70mm wider, certifiable, strong, and has readily available parts.


Still plenty left to do but the list is getting shorter

Last time we stayed there we got there at 1am, parked up on a flat looking spot and went to bed in the back of the truck. We woke up to a bit of a thud and it turned out we had parked right in the middle of that flying fox. Some kid thought he might be able to somehow miss us and went on it anyway! They didn't have that tower there at that stage so he wasn't going as fast luckily.

Those who expressed interest in the MR2 calliper brackets I can tell you the following, I'm having 2 sets (for 2 vehicles) made at this stage, they consist of 2 brackets (as pictured) and 2 spacers(don't require welding) to space the calliper from the bracket at the correct width for calliper to align with disk. (welded spacers have to be crack tested for cert)
Altogther for brackets and spacers (4 pieces total) price is $100 +gst.
Reason I', only getting the 2 sets made is I want to ensure they are correct.
Having them drawn up and made a autobend in Chch and when I'm sure they are correct i'll PM the details for you (if you ask nicely ) to get the same bracetry directly off them yourselves.

Brake brackets have worked out pretty good considering it was all done by eye
Slightest bit of filing and they're bolted on with full pad contact.



As for other progress, i've almost completed the front bullbar, i'm absolutey wrapped with the look, I still have to put the final paint on, paint the healight protectors, bolt in the winch, mount the PRS aerial, and number plate (going in centre), but i'd like any comments, I have this bar I made and an ARB bar to choose from, here's a pic of each......one will be for sale .........what do you all think

Definitely go the custom made one in my opinion. Looks better and more functional,especially for accessing your winch controls etc.

How we doin for gettin a pattern for these or contacting whoeva made yours, If I send some beer down from here it will be warm by the time it gets there but Im sure I can compensate your efforts somehow.

Keep the one you made Tim. As for mounting the number plate though, I had the same set up with the old cruiser. I made another receiver tube (obviously it can be lighter than your tow hook one), mounted a flat plate to it and the mounted the front plate on that. Don't need a front plate when you are wheeling, so you just throw it in the back. Also stops the really annoying bow wave twist when doing river crossings, (you know the one, the water rolls up the bumper or bar and turns the number plate inside out)

keep the one you made tim it looks good, i have mounted my number plate in the middle above the hawse fairlead, i drilled two holes out welded two nuts in there and just bolted the number plate on, keep up the good work, we should be back south in at least four months now,this is how mine is mounted,

That bar you've made looks good Craig, nice, strong and clean excellent for a rock truck , pretty similar look to what I had on my old Surf
Sweeps in close to each corner near the park lights, the only problem I had with that set up was when bush bashing through goasre, broom, etc or on overgrown tracks with lots of overhanging scrub was that I smahed a few of those corner lights, a couple of indicators, one headlight and if I didn't remove the spotties whenever I went on those types of trips they would get knocked around (so I usually removed them):o I built up this bar with that in mind, as it's built as a club truck the bush and river trips are the main use





Thanks to those who commented, I'd pretty much mad my mind up but that for sure now, all finished and bolted up, winch in, etc, used LED indicators tiny little white things on each corner between bars they appear white but flash very bright orange, they're sealed and less than $20 bucks
Just gotta fit the winch fairlead which I intend to drill and tap the plate to fit.

Got them from Canterbury auto electric, they are "hella" brand and ADR approved, still have to sort out a suitable flasher unit to run them, or put a resistor in as they only draw 2 watts as opposed to the original front light at 21watts, means the flasher unit goes hard out as it isn't getting the required load.......nothing is as simple as plug and play

you need a hella 3016 flasher unit , thats what i used with the rear lights all being leds about $30

Hey there guys, What is the difference between turbo and non-turbo Toyo Mr2 calipers.? Is it the handbrake setup the reason why the non-turbo mr2 rear calipers are the ones to get.?

The only difference is the width of the calliper, the non turbo ones are the correct width to match the pado rotor, from memory the turbo ones are about 4-6mm wider( as they have wider discs) so if you use them when the pads are half worn theyll fall out
