Landcruiser Hubs

Post by kwps »

Hi all. I have a 92 ZX Landcruiser. The factory electric hubs have been replaced with superwinch ones. In the weekend I managed to shear all 6 bolts holding the free wheel hub to the hub assembly (on both sides) Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the broken bolts out. I have 12 to remove in total!!!

Cheers

Sorry to here of this, but its a direct result of mixing none collet type freewheel hubs with spacers, my thourghts are to quit your losses and fit new hubs, its hard to drill out hardend bolts. Have you still got the electric hubs.

No the superwinch ones were fitted when I recently purchased the Landcruiser. By collet, do you mean those cone washers that the factory hubs have?

Thanks

The collets are the cone looking thinges ,I have got a drill ground to 30deg for creating an inturnal tapper into supperwinch hubs, this enables you to use the collets this only fixes half the problem. Main cause is having three parts ( main hub, converstion ring, & freewheel hub ) all tied together but not solidly fixed. If you want to persiver with what your got , youll need to drill and tap the main hub and useing CSK bolts X2 to bolt the ring to the main hub. this seem to work ok. Hope this info helps

not saying it will work but i found that left hand cut drill bits work really well if the thread hasnt bound or bottomed out. as soon as the drill starts to really cut(left turning bit) you put a big heave onto it and it just winds out the broken piece, or if it doesnt then use an easy out

just an option for ya

I am in Auckland.

I think I will try to remove the broken bolts and use Asian hubs with the adapter plate, if not I will try to get hold of some earlier 70 series hubs and replace the lot. Thanks

Just a thought, the hub assembly is longer than the manual set ups, thus the need for the adapter plate, does this mean that if I replace the whole hub assembly from an earlier model that the CV stub axel will need to be changed too?

The axle is the same, Its the Hub from an electric set up thats about 16mm shorter than a none electric hub. hence the need for the spacer ring. If you get hubs from a none electric L/C you can fit any type of freewheel hubs, it brings it back to a standard system

But if the hub is 16mm longer and wouldn't the axle stub stick out 16mm too long if pre 90 hubs are fitted. The axle stub is at the end still even with the spacer

Because of the electric freewheel hub is 16mm longer than the none electric freewheel hub, , and the bearing hub is 16mm shorter on the electric system ,you end up with the same overall mesurment. And you still use your same axle. You only needed the spacer when fitting a electric bearing hubs with none electric freewheel hubs

While on this subject, it is better and easier to also fit pre 1998 stub axle's, this is because the electric type stub axles are shorter by 16mm which makes it hard to fit the double nuts that are used on earler stub axles.

Sorry for my confusion but your last two posts seem to conflict. One said the stub axles are the same and one said they are different? Thanks

Th e confusion may be , there are 4 parts to this unit
1 C/V axle shaft
2 Stub axle tube
3 Main Hub ( holds bearings)
4 Freewheel hubs ( locking things )
If you buy pre 89 main hubs and Stub axle tubs, double nuts etc and fit your supperwinch hub youll be putting everthing back to standard.
Ring me on 03 5447586 if you need any more info

I got hold of an entire front diff from an 85 cruiser and I am going to fit everything back to the stub axel but I am having difficulty getting the main hub off the brake disc. What's the knack in getting that off?

Thanks

If its like the Hilux ones its probably a tight fit over the hub body, and may have a couple of bolts holding it on as well... sit the hub upside down on a piece of wood and tap around the rotor with a soft-faced hammer to try and break it loose of the years of dirt and rust that wil be probably holding it in place. They do separate, but they can be tight.

Thanks, I might be looking to sell them if I can ever get the darn discs off the '85 hubs. I haven't dismantled my hubs yet so I am unsure of the condition. Thanks

If you want to make your rebuild 100% , send me your supper-winch hubs and I'll drill a counter-sunk into the collet holes.
Contact as per earlier posts.
