Post by chchzookfan »

tossing up which id preferr who out there has a pajero?(im looking at the v6 3L 2door) are they easy to modify? an whats the go on the whole automatic thing? cant seem to find many in manual which is what id prefer.. then again i like suzukis to caple offroad ect but as an everyday vehcile they have alot less to offer compared to a pajero..

so any thoughts ? also any known problems with pajeros would be noteable here to

I voted for the 3.5 v6 pajero, but only because i own one :D
In reality a 3.0 one will be fine and are more common in manual than the 3.5's. they are pretty comfortable on road but it seems to love gas  . Mine is an auto I would have prefered a manual but couldn't pass this one up at the price Its a 1994 and i paid $1600 for it.
The autos arent too bad as they have a hold function so you can start in any gear and it wont change up or down.

As for mods i did the suspention lift in mine for $41 they have to be the easiest and cheapest 4x4 to lift!!
sorry for the bad pic just ran outside and took it, the truck needs a wash :(

Before you make your final decision you might want to price up the more serious modifications that you will may want in the future.
eg what is a spring lift or maybe a Detroit / E-Z locker diff worth?
Or even can you get crawler gears for the transfer box?

You might (I don't know for sure) find that bits for Zuks are cheaper and easier to find.
Also, information on how to do mods and what bits will fit with from different models might be more accessible for Zuks that Pajeros because they have been around a lot longer.
A good example would be my 99 Jimny which is now running the transfer box from a 1980/84 550cc SJ410. I found the trick (from someone in the UK) was to replace the rear Jimny driveshaft with the more common Samurai front driveshaft which has a standard flanges and bolts in.

thats a cool truck youve got there, im only looking to do basic mods as i would wana keep it nice an easy an wof'able, big tyres suspension lift snorkal an posibily a winch an rollbars(later on), basiclly what you have there is pretty ideal i would use it offroad but i wouldnt be doing anything scetchy in it.. more just wana be able to go some on scenic 4wd tours.. ive heard a few guys go up round the mountains on tracks that are 3m wide an no turn around points for hours which is what id like to get upto.. ive noticed they arent as cheap as they used to.. before i brought my zooks i was looking at them and they were common at the 3000$ mark.. which is pretty cheap for the amount of car you get.. petrol is definately something to think about.. as if i was going on a big trip id need extra petrol tank or something.. but then again another thing is suzukis are only 3000 for a pretty decent lil truck.. cheap on gas an reliable(in most cases lol) but theyre not to comfortable an dont have much to offer in the interior side of things.. also i heard some pajeros have some cool 4wd features with the diffs? dont really know to much about it which is why im asking here, 5 votes so far so going ok.. any reason why i should stay away from a 3L ? apart from the obvious extra power?

cheers for responses

No reason to stay away from the 3.0 they seem to be a good reliable engine, and probably simpler to fix than the dohc 24 valve 3.5 like i have.
If you dont intend to do serious mods then a pajero sounds about right for you. if you wanted to build a capable club truck go the zook!!
Some of the pajeros do have factory diff locks you wont find that with suzuki's but lockrights for them are pretty cheap.
Crawler gears are available for pajeros but arent cheap, dosen't sound like you would want or need them anyway.
lifting a pajero is cheaper than any zook, the lift in mine cost me nothing the only cost (small) was to restore the suspension droop and correct the wheel alignment.

I'm a 'zuk fan, but I've spent some time in pajeros as well.

I like the 3.5 for the extra power, and they don't burn any more gas than the 3.0L paj', they are more expensive to work on, though, from what I hear. I have been suprised at where a SWB paj' with a slight lift, on good 33's will go.

The other BIG difference is that the Paj' feels like a luxurious coach to ride in compared to a 'zuk, which is more like a badly upholstered length of railway iron, with steel girders for springs and iron-shod cartwheels to roll on.

Unless you put heavy duty suspension in, in which case they get harder-riding.

So why do I prefer the 'zuk's? Buggered if I know!

Oh, that's right, they run rings around almost everything else off-road, for your buck.

By the way, no one listens to anything I say, because I don't really know anything. So if I were you I would totally disregard the foregoing.

To clarify, I work in the motor industry and would not be prepared to repeat most of what is said by people, but if it is from a variety of mechanics I tend to give it some credence. Without personal ownership of a 3.5 to confirm it, I added the phrase "from what I hear".

I have traded a few GDi Mitsi's, and I have "heard" quite a lot.
