okay time for a decent update
got the motor all bolted in with trans
fitted the air cleaner today was surprised the car one fitted as i have changed the inlet manifold and i expected nothing to line up but it was sweet as

been working on finding somewhere to mount one of the fuel pumps i need
this one is the pressure pump with fuel filter and accumulator it has no lift so i will be installing another pump for that

i even put one of the body panels in place today that is what i will be mounting the fuel pump too

the exhaust almost lines up got to join these bits together and it will be good :mrgreen:

the scary part will be trying to sort this mess out :shock:

it isn't as bad as it looks honest

going to use one of these as the primary fuel pump not sure which one yet

all going well 2 good weekends work but you never can tell :lol:

okay lots of progress this weekend
welded up the exhaust

also fitted 2 fuel pumps
the lift pump by the fuel tank

and the pressure pump with filter and accumulator in the engine bay

got mainly electrics to sort out then time to fit the panels so all going well it will be mobile next weekend touch wood :mrgreen:

bought some rims on trademe yorick picked them up for me today while he was in akld
they are alloy16x8 porsche rims
i do need to make the centre hole slightly larger but the stud pattern is correct

so much for my 2 weekends work aye :lol:

anyways finished the engine electrics
had to work out an issue with my fuel pumps as the pressure pump pumps alot more than the lift pump so as a result it was cavitating alot this is my solution

also fitted a set of fans on the radiator they came off a wrecked merc that yorick bought awhile ago and fit well work well too you can certainly hear them working they are only setup with a manual switch at the moment will look at trying to sort out a thermal switch with manual override in the future

then started putting some panels back in place

those fans look like they are supposed to be there :mrgreen:

that is how they were setup on the car they came off they are pusher fans and the shroud makes them more efficient it does work quite well after i installed them i started the engine and got it up to half on the temp guage then turned on the fans they had the temp down to about a quarter in about 5 mins so i am very happy with them

and i figure the shroud on the front is going to help keep mud out of the radiator :mrgreen:

Oh it'll work great when you're moving slow. But on the open road they'll seriously hinder your airflow. Most pusher fans are unshrouded for that reason.

If it gets warm, trim the bottom of the shroud off

Definately rig up a up a thermo switch for the fan, it doesn't cost much to get the fitting soldered to the radiator, and you can take your pick of what temp switch you use from Repco.

I have seen far to many people cook their engines because they forgot to turn the fan on. Its also easy to wire up.

The LJ run's a single electic fan as its only fan, and i set that up on a thermo switch with an over ride and a cut out.

finally got a price back for the koni shocks i was thinking about $346 each :shock:

hmm maybe not them then besides they are actually quite a bit shorter than what i want it seems that i have somehow managed to get about 70mm of lift with my new springs :mrgreen:

Why not just but some cheap Rancho RS5000's that are the right length, then change the mountings on the shocks to suit.

You could steal the mounts off your old shocks and blaze those carefully on. A quick squirt of paintand no one would be any wiser.

Its not like you and ya old man don't have the tools to do it

changed the oils in the diffs transfer case and the engine replaced the fluid in the diff lock operating circuits

so now basically got shocks to install brakes to bleed got to get my drag link off yoricks wagen and swap it back to mine he has had it on there for a few months and still hasn't got around to getting his one sorted :lol:

oh yeah got to organise the heater hoses and then it should be mobile

still have to sort out speedo and driveshaft loop for cert though :mrgreen:

i looked into electronic speedos the theory being they are easy to adjust so would make it easy swapping between different tyres then i discovered how much they are hmm might have to go down another route possibly a bicycle speedo yes i am a cheapskate :lol:

first time it has been out of the shed for just over a year

then we had to check the flex with the new shocks and springs

took it for a drive down the road decided i need to put the anti roll bar back in :lol:

the trans worked perfectly which made yoricks day as it is a bit of a bodge :lol:

he ended up taking the oil pump bell housing and torque converter off the original g trans and fitting it to another merc trans we had lying around seems to be working well so far none of the slipage issues i had with the old trans

also went up to whangarei to pick up a spare engine luckily i haven't paid the guy yet to be honest it is stuffed will have discussions with the guy i bought it off decided since i had made the trip to take it but wasted some petrol
was thinking on the way home i should have asked more questions about it and maybe asked one of you guys to just check it over anyone who knows abit about engines could have told me what i needed to know
oh well we live and learn :oops:

running it in the shed it got hot i think i have blown the head gasket so much for a shakedown in the next few weeks

the motor had to come out anyway so i could replace the rear crank seal so will deal with them both

okay made a decision about the engine
going to put in a 3 litre sohc inline 6 cylinder engine and trans that i happen to have lying around
the engine is a mercedes M103 well known for running forever they have the added bonus of being a later model engine than the 2.8 i was putting in and they have a few more ponies :mrgreen:

i managed to pick one up from wangavegas a couple of months ago it was one of those deals that was too good to pass up bought a whole car for $200 with a stuffed water pump so went down there swapped a pump onto it then drove it back was looking at getting it on the road but the roof is rusted out so it was just sitting around taking up space

i was thinking about this a little it will be the 4th engine to occupy the engine bay during this project :oops:

i'm sure that has to be a record

no not yet things got put on hold for a while i had a back injury which put me off work for a week and then on light duties
all better now but gave me a bit of a scare
won't be doing anything on it for the next 2 weeks unfortunately but then i will probably have time to do something about it

finally i can report some progress yes i know it has been a while.
been trying to work out what to do about the trans as the one that was on the donor motor has been used to keep a car on the road was looking at an older style motor and trans the other day and noticed that it had the starter on the left hand side which is where my new engine has it so swapped the bellhousings between the g trans and this old trans and what do you know it all looks good

unfortunately while i was moving the engine around on the crane it sort of toppled over a bit and cracked the sump so that put paid to my plans of having it sitting in the wagen so swapped sump off another motor we had lying around

so hoping to have the engine and trans sitting in place this weekend then got to figure out the electrics which is a little scary

goin to see if we can fit it in with less hassle than the 3 litre will use the donor trans as well

it is a 4.2 litre alloy V8 overhead cam :mrgreen:

had a realisation the other day
was down at my parents looking at my project and thinking about the problem i have with the V8 fouling with the brake booster and realised i can fix that by a small body lift just got to check how much i need to lift it i think 50mm will be enough will have a closer look next week :mrgreen:

yes i am still trying to get this thing on the road bit difficult now i am in wellytown my g is still in tokoroa so not like i can spend much of my spare time on it

recently discovered i can get around the issue of the rocker cover fowling with the brake booster by fitting a LHD pedal box which would mean i wouldn't need to do the body lift and would give me room to lift the engine at the front to allow clearance for the oil filter housing

these are before and after pics from a guy in aussie who has put a 5 litre merc V8 in his g wagen and swapped the pedal box for a LHD unit
