a winch is either 12v or 24 v, a 24v will run bad on 12v and a 12v will run faster on 24v then burn out

$1000 to replace motor. I burnt mine out real bad last year. Am going to replace with PTO. In my opinion they are too weak for safari's.

I have a 24v warn unit on my Safari- I cant say i have used it to actually pull the truck out of mud yet (havent had car long) but i can tell you that they are dead easy to strip down and rebuild if you need. Often i think the Freespool can seize up (as was the case with mine).

well i bought a warn winch off trade me a while back now and i had to replace the brake in the drum which cost me about $250 as water had been sitting in the brake for a while and just corroded it. stripping down is easy as just takes a bit of time first time round but as soon as you know how to do it you will b an expert. place to get all the parts you need is http://www.fullyequipped.co.nz/

Hey- How did you access the middle most C clip? did you need to remove it to get the drum to pieces?
I took off the outer most C clip and was unable to tap the shaft out towards the middle..... Ive done everything except the brake so far

a pair of very long nose plyers did the trick for me then just tap it out or if not use the end of a hammer not metal end.if it is all rusted as then it might be a bit of a struggle and use some crc or something similar to help free it, it will most likely fall to bits when you get it out. thats about all i can tell you im afraid.

Dude- you rule. I was not expecting the brake to be that complex since the gearbox was so simple.
One question- obviously im a total noob!
when the winch is running in reverse- EG feeding the wire OUT using the motor... should the brake be dragging and heating the drum up?

yes m8 it will be going against the brake so it will heat up alot if you use it in reverse fro long periods of time. im using overbraid synthetic rope so i cant use the winch out for too long or it will be too hot for the rope ok for cable though.
