Flyingbrick got a Safari

Post by flyingbrick »

Hi all.

Names Nathan- I live in Te Awamutu and Auckland ATM :-D

Got my first 4wd. 1990 SWB safari. 4.2. factory warn etc. Its pretty slow compared to what im used to- but am starting to enjoy doing things at a more relaxed pace on-road.

The trucks standard as and its taken me quite a few weekends to get it cleaned up. Truck was origionally used to haul around a camera crew during some rallys overseas. I had to cut out LOTS of unused wiring (from motorised spotlights), unbolt a LOT of rusty chrome decorative BS and pulled out all of the interior carpets/seats plastic trim etc so that it could be given a huge hose/shampoo/scrub. The carpets were dyed black again before being put back in.

I have also machined up some 35x80 dia body lift blocks (still to fit) and have rebuilt (stripped, sandblasted, greased, checked, painted) the winch gearbox and motor as the free spool assembly had totally seized.

WANTED TO DO:

Make a front winch holder/bar to push the winch up and back.
Make a rear bar
Make some nerf bars
Fit my BL blocks
Lift the suspension 4" with HD/longer rear arms, drop boxes etc
Fit some fat 35's
Make up a 3" aluminum tube snorkel.
Turbo it.

and then i'll be happy. .. but most of that list wont get done.

-Nathan.

LOL!

Yeah thats me.

I have had the truck for about two months... i think. When i got the truck it pretty much looked like this:... but with dangly bumper stick light things on the front corners (they got taken off ASAP). I thought it was cool at first but decided pretty quickly that the nissan was going to look/go better if the exterior was a bit less cluttered

With that said however.......this is my first non-toyota vehicle for about 5 years and definitely the slowest. Before this i have had a single turbo soarer, TT mk4 supra, turbo SW20 Mr2 and AW11 Mr2.
(ARrrrrrgh, the memories)

I wanted another Toyota so test drove a few Hiluxes but could not handle how gutless they were on the road- it would have made it another project.

The blue truck is my parents spare car (its a NISSAN btw)- which I often have had loan of while between cars or while camping. I decided to buy my own truck after camping with some friends lead to us fooling around and doing this:

the terrano failed badly due to shit tyres, no LSD and because i was too scared of the consequences if i damaged it

When it comes to 4WDing I'm a complete novice... which is why im here....and why my GF and I are doing the free course at Woodhill this sunday  CANT WAIT!

PS. How do i become a proper member here? I'd like to sign up to the national 4wd association and get all the other benefits.

haha, yes very.

I learnt shitloads- but mostly it was just a huge confidence booster. I'd never have attempted descents and ascents like that before the course!!! didn't realise how much crap these things could handle.
