moving lpg tank

Post by Denz »

hi i recently bought a 1975 fj40 with a 4.2 petrol it has lpg fitted. The car needs some work so im stripping it down and goin 2 spray it and rebuild it. So while its apart i thought i would move the lpg tank from under the back to behind the front seats in the cab but that will leave me with like a metres extra pipe. So what i want 2 know is can i curl up the pipe or worst cut it will either of these effect the lpg check as it expired in 99 so i need a new 1 or more importantly will it change the amont of gas goin to the engine? any info would be great or if you have any other ideas thanks

You would be better of to cut the pipe than to curl it up, either way you will have to get it check for a gas wof. if you are putting it (the tank)inside the cab it will need to be vented to the outside, not a major. none of that will change the amount of gas going to the engine.

Is it a flexi hose or a copper pipe? Some of the pipes have an olive so a cut isn't a biggie. Even topless you will need to vent the cyl through the floor and away from your exh, 200mm from memory. You can't run the fuel hose down the d/shaft tunnel

its a copper pipe from memory it already runs along the side so was goin to make a hole and have it come in that way so shouldnt be near the d/shaft. so where would i need to make the hole to vent it to?

You need to seal all fittings off from the cab and vent them out side.
Most tanks have a vapour box sealed to the tank with 50mm pipes off this that you hose clip a special bag to and seal it to a fitting on the floor. The bag needs to take a certain volume of leaking gas at a certain pressure.
If you bottle hasn't got a vent box because it has been external you need to find one. All tanks need testing every 10? years so check the last test date on your tank it may have expired. External tanks are prone to rusting and gouges which may/will fail the test so maybe another tank complete with vent box will be the answer.

i dont think it has a vent box which could cause a problem then. The tanks a bit rusty but not much the test expired in 99 so needed a new one anyway. by the sounds of it it might be easyier to leave it on the back just worried about smashing on a rock. Thanks for the help

and on top of all that the fuel lines for LPG MUST be installed or modified by a certified LPG installer... you are legally not allowed to do it yourself.

Sounds like it could be too hard :)

Old tanks are easy to find tho, get one with a vent box around the valves etc from an old falcon or something, then pay your $80 for the 10 year test and chuck it in... Best to talk to an LPG installer first tho...

the lpg guy said that i have to get a sealed pipe to vent it (which they have) and that they have to cut the pipe but if i weld up the brackets (done) bolt it in and drill the holes for the pipes etc they will do the rest said it shouldnt cost much so it sounds good to me cheaper than buying petrol. So thanks for all your help guys
