Out from Ashhurst, thru gorge towards woodville, up hallblock Road, thru Nth Range, down pahiatua track (towards Palmerston Nth) and onwards to dam trip. Not a lot of exciting stuff up there anymore. A narrow winding road, a few good places to gaze directly up at a massive 3MW wind turbine, and few good views, a couple of climbs and decents and thats about it. Good cross section views from one side to the other and also through the wind farms.
dunno about gazin at those big lumps of hidden concrete that I boxed and poured during winter, cant see why they put them up there not windy at all, yeah right, funniest thing I ever saw was a full wool ewe being blown over and rolling across the paddock

I was up there when they stripped the shutts off them, nice bulges...
Aside from that, the funniest wind related thing I saw up there was magnetic sign get ripped off a car door, it was about 250mm by 300mm and was stuck on good but when he drove out round a corner and into the wind the wind pulled the sign off the door...
Wind turbines up there shut down at 25m/s (90kph). Highest wind I have monitored up around those hills was 162kph.

On a slightly more serious note... Oldish news but looking out on the river lately, still very relevant. For those that want to swim, still plenty of places that appear clear but please do check up stream if intending to let dogs run about. Water temp is running in low twenties about mid afternoon so very nice swimming to be had. Might be needed to wash all the dust off before the evening beers!
Just noted when rereading the article, babies and young children are susceptible to this also...
Note: have underlined areas of river where we may end up.
Horizons steps up algae warnings Fri 16 Jan 09
A nasty surprise could be waiting for people hoping to make the most of summer by heading for many of the region’s rivers and streams
Horizons Regional Council scientists warned yesterday that outbreaks of potentially harmful blue-green algae were widespread in the upper Manawatu River and its tributaries upstream of the Ashhurst Domain, though there were some clear swimming spots on the Pohangina River.
The algae, which can kill dogs and harm humans, has also been confirmed in Palmerston North at the end of Albert St and in the Oroua River at Awahuri.
Horizons environmental scientist Kate McArthur said the lack of rain and continuing warm weather were creating ideal conditions for the slimy black Phormidium growths to take hold in shallow reaches of the region’s rivers and streams.
"While we have been able to confirm the algae is present in a significant number of popular swimming spots, people should keep themselves and their pets safe by assuming that all waterways may have Phormidium present and they should check for obvious signs before swimming," said Ms McArthur.
"Young children and babies are at greater risk, and dogs should be kept away from any river with obvious signs of growth.
"Fishing in areas with signs of the algae is probably okay but fish might taste muddy and should be thoroughly washed with clean water. Don’t eat the kidneys and liver."
Ms McArthur said rivers with better water quality were generally likely to have less algal growth and be safer for swimming.
"Anyone wondering if they have found a safe place to swim should check upstream for shallow areas where the water is broken, such as riffles or rapids. If there’s any slimy black growth in the water, or dried material on the river’s edge, swimming is probably not advisable."
She said checks yesterday showed no growths on the Pohangina River at Piripiri, Mais Reach and the Totara Reserve, though anyone visiting those areas should check for themselves.
"While these areas were clear and fine for swimming when we checked them, people should remain vigilant as growths and blooms can develop rapidly at any time."
Ms McArthur said algae had been confirmed at the following sites:
All of the Manawatu River between Ashhurst Domain and somewhere upstream of Hopelands Reserve (most likely as far upstream as above Weber Rd)
Manawatu at Ashhurst Domain - moderate growth
Tamaki at Stephensons (lower Tamaki)
Mangatainoka River at State Hghway 2 Reserve and a large number of other sites in the Mangatainoka
Makakahi at Hamua
Tiraumea at Ngaturi
Tiraumea at Haupokua Reserve and anywhere near the Ngaturi Bridge
Mangatoro at Mangahei Rd
Makuri at Tuscan Hills
Oroua at Awahuri - moderate to low levels
Manawatu at Albert Street - low levels
Waikawa Stream downstream of SH1
Mangahao at Marima Domain

north range road is nothing more than a gravel road and scotts road is councill owned land and access is not generally available to the public despite what others may think. not that it has stopped me in the past but the point needed to be made that if we were to be stopped it may not be the best look for ore/kiwi4x4 edit this was not ment to sound negative just informative, what about a drive up the pohongina river then up takapari road?

as far as I was aware it is all land that needs permission to gain access but unlike a woman I have been wrong before, I know I get in trouble if I happen to wander in there with a rifle slung accross my shoulder anyway you should be outside workin on that racecar
