3.8 V.6 what gearbox to use

hey all, ive got a commdore VN v6 for my suzuki ecudo and i am just wanting to know what the best gearbox transfer case to use? i was considering an auto from a hilux surf. any help would be great, cheers

Most keep the Commodore auto and adapt it to the toyota transfer cases, change the output shaft and an adapter there was a writeup on here by Chopper that went through what needed to be done (I can't find the thread it is here somewhere).

The Commodore automatic is actualy shorter than the Toyota so his dual transfer cases ment almost no change to his drive line.

Use a divorced transfer case. Datsun 720 works. So do some landcruiser ones.
Some where a fella had a bulid with a land crab box with PTO monted midship in a Jimmy.
Looked like a great setup.

A divorced transfercase is a stand alone tcase. One that is not already attached to or part of the gearbox. They are attached via a small (normally) shaft. They have their own oil supply and are easy to work with.

The most commonly used is the Datsun 720.

A divorced transfer case is a broken transfer caser that has been put under to much stress from the whining gearbox it was coupled to. You can spot it fairly easily as it's internal workings have been smashed to bits. You can also smell a bitter bile type bile from it as well.

You will have to check which way it is coupled to. The difference between a female and male divorced transfer case are fairly easy to spot. The female comes attached to the whole truck and the male is normally discarded until it can be refurbished and attached to a decent truck

You can the cost of keepin the manual is Higher as the clutch usualy goes larger and the bell housing replaced or modified, there are a couple of places that do this, keeping the manual with the 3.8 you also have to be careful of your diffs the auto takes the savageness out of the 3.8 the manual does not.

The price difference is not a lot and depending on driving style know people with both auto and manual and they drive the way the 4wd will survive, me personaly I like the manual for certainty downhill but in all the river work done down here I see the benefits of the auto.

Easy as to make your own adapter for these to go onto the toy gear driven transfer case if you have access to a lathe.

if i was to do this conversion i would have to buy the stuff to do it, unless someone was aready setup package

Something to consider when selecting an auto is the control it offers on descents, especially in reverse. The best time to lose it and roll is going backwards fast downhill with the brakes locking the front wheels.

A ZF HP22 4 speed (Disco/Rangie) engine brakes from idle when locked in first, enough to descend a cliff but goes a little quicker in reverse. Also gives lightning manual shifts either up or down and in only my opinion is one of the best off road autos there is. Not suggesting you use one, just suggesting this engine braking ability should be well up your wish list for capability and safety. Some just don't have it or not enough of it. cheers
