So what's involved in getting this roadlegal?
Are certfied welders required for chassis and suspension welding or just inspected welds?
Are certfied welders required for chassis and suspension welding or just inspected welds?
Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
dont need to be certified welder they just look at ya welds..and aslong as theyre all g then no bother
if my surf had airbags then itd be more intense certification exercise.
ive got acouple more braces to put in just to beef it right up but as it is it world be strong enough.
after the new year the certifier is going to come check the suspension out and tell me anything i needa change but i cant see there being any issues.
Obviously it wont get certd until whatever engine i choose to use is out in at the moment its still got the 2lte
Cheers

BRAKES
now my brakes have never been flash..one of the reasons is the master cylinder is bypassing and two well, its a surf..they dont have the BEST brakes around. now since ive got 35s and going commy i wanna be able to haul up when i want to so im havn a big spend up (again) to get te issues sorted.
1) new master cylinder, i do want to go disks on the rears so whats the story with getting a master cylinder wit proportioning valve? if i get calipers that are cable operated for the rear will i need the proportioning valve or stick with stock surf one or not?
2) new rotors, for the $$ is it worth buying slotted rotors? from the states theyre just over twice the price of stock ones here.
3) ill be going braided lines to try help eliminate the spongy feel rubber hose can give
4) i want grippy pads..seems you can only get two sorts..bendix and feredo (spelling) standard and the "4wd version" of each but there r heaps of different ones available ex the states. has anyone used the "4wd version" pads
thanks in advance for any comments

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
Mine stops great, even on 40's, I have an 80 series master cyl which is larger bore, and commodore front calipers on the back, cruiser discs on the front with IFS calipers. Dont buy slotted discs, do them yourself, your an engineer. Honestly I dunno whether the slots made any difference. We can supply braided line kits.

80 series is bigger than 1" bore? does it have proportioning valve?
80 series rotors on the front?
what rotors have u got on the back?
what r the braided hoses worth from u?

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
80 series is 1" and has residual valves, not proportioning valve
They are 40 series rotors DBA # 151 brand new are about $60 from Les Hunter Automotive in ChCh
Rear rotors are solid axle Hilux fronts
See page 1 and 2 of my build thread
braided lines are about $60 each

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
Slotted rotors are only for better cleaning ability. They don't grip the pads any better than solid rotors do.
Vented rotors shed heat better, again they don't stop better when cold but take a whole lot more punishment before heating enough to fade.

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
right sorted...just bought some suby calipers for $25ea. so im going with new surf vented rotors on the front, suby calipers on the rear with hilux rotors and 80series master cylinder, braided lines and a good set of brake pads.
nothing new but hey its tried n true and resonably cheap.
that should stop me fairly good

Iv never had them before..whats the preferred method of mounting them, solid mount to chassis and build from there or have them removable?
opinions and a statement as to why would be the shiz
Thanks

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
IMO bracket mount to the chassis. You can then exo (if required) off it and have no cert issues as it is all bolt on, and is a roof rack

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
I had them removeable on my last truck........didn't ever remove them in about 4yrs
This time i've welded them to the chassis as I never intend to remove them, as you need cert anyway it's fine to weld them in place, if you intend to do a body lift make sure you do that first or they'll be too low

yep done bodylift. i was thinking i was gunna weld them onto chassis as i couldnt see any need to remove them.

In My Opinion
Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
well 2lte is long gone, finally got around to putting some gussets onto radius arm mounts so thats all done. removed efi wiring and the diesel stuff i wont require.
next stage is put marks adaptor onto the t700 trans and then put the engine in!
id like to have the adaptor on in the next two weeks
whether i get time/can bothered or not is different story

wired up my this weekend so it was all turn off the key and cost me under $100 and took me 10 min
the tacho dose not work but will put the petorl dash in and hook it up , the marks loom kit is a good idea but I could not spend that much cash on something I can do myself

but it depends on what you want if you want to shag arround with the wiring or use a plug and play loom

Re: Shiney Axle Swap ;)
yea only used two relays some wire and two fueses , there are two wires that go straight the + and there is one wire for the computer and another wire for the injectors that go through the relay , you will also have the fuel pump to wire up as well and the starter motor to wire up , plus the altinator but that has its own loom and is simple to wire in , is your adaptior the one that you need to strip down the auto to replace the main shaft , the adaptior I put in my rig was one of the ones Glen got me and I thought it was farken great so easy to put together

I will sit down and nut out the colours of the wires you need and write up a post in the next few days
