I have a 88 2.5TD NON intercooled LWB, IFS, LSD, POS, PAJ

Heads are a weak point >insert hand grenade pic here< SERVICING IS CRITICAL on these motors, most 2.5 seems to either expire around the 140k mark or last 300k + :D good servicing and regular oil changes seem to be the key to the 300k + motors, Oil goes black by the time it gets to the sump after an oil change!!!!

Onroad .. one word GUTLESS .. dont expect to pass much however they will chugg along all day @ 10k/L no problems , Nice to drive onroad with the IFS but feel a bit vague in the steering (LWB anyhoo) Motors DONT like reving and sort of run out of puff after about 3500rpm even modern 2.5 Mitsi Diesels do the same as my 2008 Mitsi L300 work van does the same.
The motors are harsh, noisy and a little rough when cold but settle down once warm, they HATE starting when really cold and need a good glow, i glow mide a couple of times if i havnt started it for a few days or so.
cheap as chips to buy and a good entry level truck for people on a tight budget (I wouldnt pay any more than about $1800-2000 for a good one)

Offroad if they are fitted with the factory LSD are suprisinaly capable, so far ive managed to outdrive all my prevous trucks on a particular streach of hill up the back of the farm ive attempted to drive the same hill with a Surf, 1600 Escudo, 2.0 V6 Vitara, and Feroza, only the Feroza got to the top of the hill on second attempt, the Paj just sailed up with not a drama in the world.

the 80's paj's are prone to rusting in all the usual mid 80's places .. take particular note around the bonnet hinges on the firewall, Ive seen a lot of Paj's with patches there (mine included) also check the rear door hinges as the rear door is large and heavy. slide under and check for rust around the running board mounts if fitted the front ones rot out and if left on can start on the floor.
If yours has the factory bouncy seats check the frames for cracking as they are nortoruos for breaking with big heavy kiwi blokes bouncing on them. :D

Overall even though they are IFS if it has a rear LSD it will take you most places a Saf will, the rear has exceptional articulation (even the old leaf sprung ones) and goes a long way of limiting the IFS's lack of travel. Mods are easy to do tho, torsion bar wind in the front and some longer springs from a wrecker and your away .. they take 31's with no suspention lift and 33's with a 2 inch lift.
