wastegate for navara

Post by rockyman »

looking at putting a bigger wastegate on my turbo navara, does anyone know how big the stock ones are? and what advantage, if there is any of putting a bigger one on? im not mechanically minded when it comes to trucks so any help would be greatly appreciated

:D cheers

Why do you want a bigger wastegate?
Do you want to run absolutely no boost?

oh, i was told that a wastegate makes em go faster .....so a smaller wastegate would be better?

Your navara will already have a wastegate, internal to the turbo.
Cutting the arm that moves the wastegate and putting in a threaded section (sleeve nut) will let you adjust when the wastegate opens, which will change how much boost you have.
Or you can buy one of those ricer boost controllers. But they're a lot of money for something that just sits under your bonnet and hisses.

You only need to fit a bigger wastegate if the one you have can't control the boost.
If you want to increase boost then as said above either mechanically alter it or fit an electronic boost controller or a bleed tap.
An electronic boost controller uses a solenoid to regulate the pressure to the wastegate. This also has the advantage of stopping wastegate creep where the wastegate will actually start to open before you want it to. This means that peak boost will take longer to happen.
The bleed tap does a similar thing but all it does is bleed a small amount of pressure from the wastegate feed line to fool the wastegate into not opening. Pretty basic but it works, also a cheap option.
But changing the boost won't do much unless you also get the motor tuned at the same time ie fuel adjusted.
Also don't play with boost unless you have a boost gauge to monitor it and don't play with the fuel unless you have a pyro to monitor EGT's.

What have you done need more control of the turbo?

the wastegate i have now is stock so it wont be able to control the boost, how big should i go? would fitting a bigger one be more practical than fitting a boost controller?

or would i be better off leaving it alone? lol

it will be a QD32.

the wategate will be fine. if you need to increase boost use a boost controller or "boost T".

boost on its own doesn't necessarily increase power. to increase power in a decent way you need to increase fuel as well as boost. to do that you need to find if its mechanical injection or electronic.
also you will need to find if its a factory turbo motor or is the turbo fitted aftermarket.
if in doubt post some pics !

before you go winding the boost and fuel up you will need to fit boost gauge (so you know what boost you have and what to increase it to) and also an EGT gauge (measures exhaust temp, pour to much fuel in makes temps to high and you melt pistons).

i think its mechanical injection, and the truck has a Denco turbo on it fitted by nissan new zealand when it was first imported, how would i go about fitting a boost guage??

thanks for the help :D

The hardest parts in fitting a boost guage are:
1. Where to mount it inside.
2. Where to bring the line through from inside to outside.

Plumbing it into the engine is stupidly easy, find a line off the turbo or intake piping and splice it in. The turbo wastegate line is an easy target.

go repco get a vacume line t and a neddle velve and u have a bleed to air boost controler and t into vac hose off the inlet manfold to a gadge its that easy

got a pic ?

i haven't done much with QD32's. the only ones i've seen and including pics off have had electronic controlled pumps.
if its a denco kit i would think its highly likely that there is a connection on the cross over tube that the boost gauge can connect to. otherwise find the tube that goes from cross over pipe to boost sensor or boost comp on top of the injection pump.

i had heard the Nissan started fitting after market turbo's to the early ones due to everyone else having 3 litre turbo diesels except Nissan. Nissan would have been loosing a lot of sales. however i think later on they had a factory turbo version including an intercooled version.

go repco get a vacume line t and a neddle velve and u have a bleed to air boost controler and t into vac hose off the inlet manfold to a gadge its that easy

forget increasing boost just yet. i don't like reading boost off the turbo itself. also a "Boost T" gets boost up quicker than a bleed type .

main thing is to see what boost is actually going into the motor and hope fully if he fits an EGT gauge he can look at increasing fueling and boost if required.

t off the manfold for boost gadge there will be a vac hose of the plembum it is your truest point of boost. i have one on my 95 2.7dt its simple

You'll have to bleed off a huge amount of air doing it that way. You need to fit a restriction to the pressure side of the T so you can lower the air consumption of your boost controller.

Personally I dislike the bleed type controllers and the electrical type too. The best way IMO is to cut and thread the wastegate arm. This has the advantage of creating more preload to go with the higher boost setting so it doesn't get blown open. The other advantage is you can decrease boost as well as increase and there's nothing spraying air with oil mist in your engine bay.
