Alternator problem???

Post by SmurfN »

i think i have an alternator problem in my 85 surf. the charge light is on following last weekend when water got in engine bay. everything was sweet this week then went out red rocks today and on the way back out she kept on dying. the volts were half way between the bottom and half way. had to keep using jump pack. the volts would drop as soon as took jump pack off and i would get 100-200 metres and it was back firing and running rough as. then managed to make room to leave jump back connected and drove all the way to lower hutt from red rocks sweet as. no back firing or shuddering with constant charge from jump pack.

is this an alternator problem? does anyone know if there is any way to test it? i am not really in a position at the moment to spend heaps of cash on a new alternator. does anyone know how to rebuild them?

appreciate any help or suggestions.

what motor is it? (2lT?)

one option is to pull it out and get nappo? in lower hutt to check it out, otherwise reece (suzuki1k) might be keen to check it out for a small beer cost?, otherwise i have a rebuilt rebuilt 2lte one here which may be the same

alt arent hard to rebuild, replace bearings and bushes first before you take it to anyone, thems the first things that go, do that, see if it helps, then if no go, take to a auto sparky

when this used to happen to my suzuki I would start the engine and then squirt the hose through the alternator. the brushes get mud on them and get stuck and stop contacting. sometimes would need to open the back and prise the brushes a little. happened with rover alternator as well.
