20-22 Feb 2009

Post by curly12 »

Well on holiday at my parents place in Wellsford for a week or two. In addition to helping look after Dad I was planning on getting some work done on the POS. The plan is for the construction of storage in the back of it and making a platform for a double mattress.

Like this...

Image

However due to an incident with a grinder, TV aerial, Roof top, metal poles and a gust of wind, things have been put on hold while my hand recovers....

Anyway did take some photos that will surprise the people that know my POS..

The back cleaned out

Image

and ready to measure for the storage unit and yes that is rain belting down......
So just may have to pop down to the trials this weekend instead of working on it

and somewhere over there are hills...........

on call this week so cant drive my beastie :( Id been having trouble with my new winch since installing it, basically the cable that i bought from JA Russells was only rated to 100amps!!!, after about 20-30 secs of winching the cables would get really hot and the winch would slllloooooowwwwww right down, leave it till the cables where cool and away she went again,

was out at the old Marsden B power station the other day for work and spotted coils and coils of *extra* heavy duty Arc welding cables "mothballed" for the last 10 years or so, after chatting to the caretaker/site manager 20m of arc welding cable was promtly dumped into tthe back of the van ... qucik trip to JA Russells for some brass crimp connectors I now have 750amp rated cables to run the winch ... lets see the bloodly thing get those hot  oh and had enough left over to give my old TranArc Stick welder a bit of a birthday too

At long last I managed to get some time under the 'scud today. Changed out the front diff' and haven't popped the old one apart yet, it might be interesting as it actually looks like I've pinged it from the inside! I expect to see some lunched bits inside when I'm brave enough to open it.

Thankfully I had the spare diff' I got from MrO some time ago.

Also saw how the right front suspension has been pounded back. The forward lower A-arm mount has taken a hell of a whack and the a-arm is sitting about 3/4 inch too far to the rear. I guess that will mean a trip to the panelbeaters to get it re-aligned. I'll get him to weld some strengthening onto it once it's back in place I think.

Having never pulled out a front diff' before it took me all day to change them over and I pulled off more stuff than was necessary, but what the heck, I'll know better next time.

One good thing, it gave me an excuse to pull the sway-bar out while I was under there.

did a bitava flex test, now that ive got extended brake lines fitted, was just curious at how much the factory shocks were limiting travel, so i unbolted left front shock, drop side, and got to the point where i was loosing traction in the rear as rear was cuming off the ground, (rear shocks captive) as was slippery as with all the rain, but was suprised when i measured 700mm up under the right front wheel, good ol 24 year old springs ay, so when i do body lift to clear the gaurds more and get longer shocks all around, rear extended shackles and maybe remove the ties in the leafs, should be more than enuf for now, cheap quick fix anyway

Bought a portable mig off TM, for those trail repairs that require welding stuff and theres no MacGuyver about to do it with two jumper leads and a copper coin.

Charged em up all day yesterday and last night to find the batteries are poked. Called the guy who told me that it was 3 years ago since they were last charged....... hhhmmmmmm   :x Just to check ran a meter over them, and sure enough, theyre buggered.

Called him again to sort out what was going to be done about it (between $70 and $115 each to replace) and he immediately offered to reimburse me for purchasing two new ones, or we could cancel the deal. I thought i was gunna be in for a scrap, but he manned up and sorted with no blood spilt...... sweet result...... :D :D Batteries will be here tuesday.

Had a morning wandering around the Nat's. Feel motivated again to get a move on with the POS. Justr have to find a money tree somewhere so I can get on with it.

Cleaned out the inside of the shiny and inwestigated at why the front aux 12v socket crapped out, looks like the ciggy socket has died (its not the first one i've had to replace in trucks  ), went to start the POS to take it for a run (hasen't been out for a week or 2) and both batteries in it appear flat so have just pulled these out and stuck them on the battery charger. could be one of the ongoing wiring faults I have with this but then this will be sorted with the impending body swop coming up with the fresh loom.
