New Project - Series 2A Rebuild - Ongoing Q's

Post by Loonez »

Hi Guys,

not sure where to put this thread but im going to be asking afew questions about the rebuild im doin plus i want to show what im doin, but if its in the wrong place can it b moved to where its sposed to be, thanks

ok i just recently bought a "1968 Series 2A Landy", its got a LD28 diesel motor, (i think Stndrd 4spd box n transfer case & diffs), a Fairey Overdrive, fat tyres ( i hate the skinny 1's), F.W.H's, basically a standard landy but in need of a rebuild.

I stay in whangarei & the landy is still in auckz atm went n paid for it n towed it to a family members for storage on the 15th March '08', i'll get it up to whangarei in a month, cash flow suxz atm lol, but atleast i got the motor running so it'll be a test run drive up to whanga's.

looking thru all these threads n websites covering the landy, n seeing wat other ppl have done to their beasts, its givin me alot of thoughts lately, been brainstorming hard  , i want to deck the rear tray out abit different to wat others have done to theirs.

so my first Q is wud sum 1 that has a series 2A or jst has a rear tray wud they b able to measure up the inside, ive made a quick drawing ( n no it aint to scale or done properly) lol, but u get the gist of the bits im after, i wud measure it myself but ofcourse i dont have the landy in the garage hahaha, if sum 1 cud help me out i'd b much appreciated

I jst gotta figure out how to post a pic, i saw a thread on that ill go looky n post 1, ill also post the pics i do have of the landy atm but i will b getting updated 1's once the old girl gets home lol

Thanks alot DJ

I'll pop out to the "other" shed tomorrow & get the measurements for you .... but remember that the bulkhead behind the front seats is NOT a straight vertical - I'll get the measurements & post tomorrow (unless someone else beats me to it.

Yea measurements wud be good Jase on that seat,i basically want to mount it on the floor between the wheel wells so it wud have to no longer then 920mm, althou make it 1m n under i can raise the seat if need b ( i think i might have to anyways) n i already got a donor for parts n its frm a local sourse so ill have to pass on that 1 but thanks for the offer, wud u have an old diesel pump off a LD28 motor layin around thou ?? , well more the top hat off the pump, coz my 1's shit it self,

oopz wrong wording on my part sorry furgus, the bit in after is the door jam, im lookin at making a box that hooks onto the tailgate, that wen u drop the tail gate i can unhook the box so i need a measrement for the width of the rear door frame so the box will fold up with the taigate was thinkin of makin a bbq in the box but now have other ideas on that 1.

hey, are you going to put bigger tyres on you landy??

if not i wouldnt worry too much about a lift, these do have pretty good approach and departure angles and short wheel base helps out on not getting hung up on things.

i'm only saying this as the landys are quite narrow wheel base and tend to be quite top heavy anyway, and pays to be very careful off road if you have to go on any sort of lean. i know i have had my one on 2 wheels several times (although it is a 109), once was quite bad went to go right over but a pine tree caught me hehehe!

or if you dont need your landy to be road legal you could do the old "spring over axle trick"

best of luck any hows

dont bother lifting it, I never had any problems running 32" bfgs on my 2a, and would fit 33's no problem (but starting to get hard on rear axles).

I have since coiled my landrover, which lifted it, I then dropped a lexus v8 into it, bolted on 37's decided it was way too high, pulled out the coils and dropped it back to standard height (but im goin airbags now).

so no liftage should be needed. I used to have shit loads of fun in mine before I started modding it heavily (only mods were injected 202 holden and 32" bfg's). I started to heavily mod it when I started blowing rear axles. In hindsight I should have just dropped a salisbury rear into it and kept it going, but instead I decided on yotas and then got carried away

Update

I couldnt be bothered typing it all out again so just copied n pasted

On the 12th went to auckz to get the landy ready for the drive back to whangarei, firstly i replaced 2 seals in the diesel pump that had a leak, topped up all the fluids - motor, Gbox, transfer case, overdrive, diffs, greased all the points, checked the lights & got the 1's going that werent going(grounding wasnt good so re-did most of the grounding points for the wiring),went n got a headlight from Pick A Part for $20 n then tried to start the ol'girl up but nope she didnt want to go so packed it in for the night.

Got up Sunday n bleed the brakes n then got onto figuring out why the stop lights weren't going, in the end had to re-wire part of the spaghetti that sum 1 had done to it   , found out that the fan was wired up to 2 relays n even then they wern't doing anything as the fan was on its own loom so made sure 1 relay was for the fan n the other relay got wired in for the stop lights n wala they went  , that took a couple of hours to sort out n fix, then got on to getting her running, took off the connection for the glow plugs n sanded that down to make sure there was power to all the plugs, then tried to tow start her but that was a waste of time, ended up pulling the pump apart n making sure it was all lined properly, once it was back together she started off the key no problems, ran her for awhile to make sure there wasnt a heating problem n there wasnt, i then had to change batteries back over, once the original battery was in jump started her n left her runnin for about 1/2hr n then went to turn on the lights to make sure they were still going n the B***H died   that meant the alternator wasnt doin its job properly, my uncle offered 1 of his batteries that he had at his house, so got the bonnet n drivers window back in n made sure there wasnt anything i had missed n drove over to my uncles, 2 mins down the road thou the ol'girl died, so thats me on the side of the road pulling out my battery n substituting it for 1 out of my uncles pajero  got to his place n had a munch then got out n sorted out the slop in the steering, found out the alt was slopy so tightened that up (it puts out a charge now  ) fixed the wiper arm, well made a good 1 out of the 2, at this point it was close to 11pm n everything was finally sorted, so warmed her up n re-checked all the lights, once i was happy everything was ok took off for the trip home.

The trip home was good, only had 2 hick ups, i stopped in at the BP before Silverdale to give the ol'girl a rest, went round n made sure all the wheel nuts were tight, went to leave n found i only had 1 head light, that took me just under a hour to sort that out n then found i didnt have highbeam but thats algood as i hardly use highbeam anyways, got back on the road n then had the speedo crap out just before Warkworth, so had no speedo the rest of the way home, but i gotta say after not running for just over 20 months n only using $30 diesel to get from pakuranga in auckz to whangarei is pretty good running on a LD28, even thou i was soft on the motor n didnt stress it too much (didnt want to take it too hard seen as she hadnt been running for awhile), while i had the speedo going it got up to about 58mph in 4th without the overdrive engaged so yea did pretty good, n now that i got her home i can slowly do the repairs she needs. n yes i know im a few days late in posting, i only jst got the time to write it up

i got back home about 3:30 monday morning, n u can usually do it in 2 hrs in a average car, well depending on traffic, if the traffic gets worse u can say a 3hr trip. I've done it in a 1hr 36 mins in the rain, at night, n i only went over 110kph 3 times n that was to pass slow cars  but yea i didn't push the landy too hard coz it was its first long run in over 20months or more

Heya Guys,

I'm looking at putting in a power steering unit in the landy & I was wondering which box would be the best one to use, ( i.e. the one that needs the least amount of mod's done to fit it)

I was thinking has anyone put a falcon power steering box in ??

i know it'd be a good unit to use & havin one would be ideal at the mo coz then i could see how i'd go about mounting it on the chassis rail n so forth,

Any feed back is appreciated

Cheers
