FJ75 chev conversion

Post by Sadam_Husain »

I'm undertaking a sbc conversion in a 70 series cruiser, the engine is now mounted and bolted up. I'm looking at exhaust options, I can only run the pipes down the passenger side of the vehicle on the inside of the chassis rails but I dont want to cross the drivers side exhaust accross under the engine. This leaves me with trying to get the exhausts accross the chassis rails and down the outside of the chassis. The engine still has rams horn manifolds (centre exit) and it only gives me about 100-110mm hight from the bottom of the flange to the top of the chassis rails. I dont know if I can exit the exhausts this way or if I'll have to get headers made up for it to get over the chassis rails.
Has anyone else had to make up exhausts for this conversion or has any usefull advise?

The 70 series front axle is mounted back further than a 40 and it leaves the chassis rails a little higher at the exhaust exit point where you cross over the chassis rails.

ive done the same on a fj40 as jtop said and it works well..

to get manifold made would cost heaps and if i was doin them i would tig all joins...

but go do some research on the block hugger type ther only like 300 ish for a pair and dont get in the way like other manifold ive seen...

any questions on the chev feel free mate and good luck with the build up

Block huggers would definately fit in better than the rams horn manifolds but I'd then have to cross the drivers side exhaust accross under the sump (or by the bell housing where it will end up getting crushed) to exit down the inside of the passenger side chassis rail. I can't get the drivers side pipe down the inside of the chassis rail because of the vacume unit on the transfercase. There's about a 50mm gap between the vacume unit and the chassis.

I should have everything else re-assembled and hooked up this week and can get the exhaust guys to take a look?

The trucks back from the exhaust guys and on the road again. Couldn't get the pipes over the chassis rails without a really tight and restrictive right angle bend which would of ended up touching the chassis rails with engine torqueing so ended up with block huggers to get inside the chassis rails (passenger rams horn was sitting slightly on top of the chassis rail). He did a cross over under the sump and 2 into 1 just before the oil filter and down the inside of the chassis rail above the bash plate. I can still get the starter motor and oil filter out without disconnecting exhaust pipes. Not really the way I wanted the exhausts done but there were too many constraints doing it any other way. Other than a $2k-plus custom made header setup practicality had to prevail.

Was done by one of the guys at Pit Stop Tory St (Wgtn) and tucked up out of the way very nicely.
