sx5 landcruiser
sx5 landcruiser
my dad is looking at a 1987 SX5 landcrusier swb with a 2.4 t diesel motor, has 214 k on the clock, are the 2.4 T engines any good what are they like on and off road.
same as the 2.4TD in the surf... don't go there. Unreliable.
Otherwise a very nice coil-sprung SWB cruiser. Comfy and handle well... not bad offroad, but if on factory suspension still will definitely need upgrading, at least the shocks.
Also known as the "bundera" - that should help on the web searches...

Re: sx5 landcruiser
Hi Im new to 4wding and was looking to get one of these trucks for daily driving and going offroad on weekends..
Is the 2L-T a definite no-go?
Keen on a Toyota Diesel in Automatic, my budget is around $5-6000, looking for lower k's, cambelt done if I can find it.
What engine should I be looking for?
2.4 L turbodiesel I4
2.8 L diesel I4
3.0 L turbodiesel I4
2.7 L 3RZ-FE
3.0 L 1KZ-TE
?
Cheers

Re: sx5 landcruiser
I have always been a believer that the 2.4 diesel (2lt) are a time bomb.
Cracking of the cyclinder head is just a matter of time
But:
My old man has a SWB Prado. Jap import. He has owned it since it had 80,000k on the clock.
It now has over 280,000k.
Sure it has been well looked after, but according to my belief, it should still have cracked the cyclinder head by now!!!!
He just had the cam belt, water pump and other front end work done, but prior to that he thought he had better get it compression tested and checked over to make sre it wasn't going to be a waste of $$, if it was indeed on its last legs.
It checked out fine apart from a couple of dodgy glow plugs, so here goes for another 100k's
Our theory is that it has never really towed anything substantial, has always done long trips on the open road as it has always lived out of town, has always had a turbo timer, and the engine and cooling system has always been well maintained.
It is also still running the standard exhaust
It may be that the SWB system being shorter the the LWB system, it doesn't hold as much heat??
Anyways, i reckon you can't write the 2.4 off, if you get one for the right price.
The 1kz-te would be prefferable, as it's a bit better motor (still don't stand being over heated and do heads though), but for the right price i would still take a 2lt and factor in a top end overhaul in the future ($1200 for the head), and a 3" exhaust straight off as soon as i got it.

2LT will do its head if not kept cool or if its not had regular maintenence, My 92 Prado had the later 2L-Te and I used and abused this with no problems at 217 when I sold it, 1Kzte's are known to do heads as well.....
Aside from the hand grenade motor you get coils and a nice wee truck, when the motor dies drop a 1kzte, commy v6 or a lexus V8 into it
There have been a few discussions on here re the 2LT, maybe do a search and read up on them. there have been some tips on how to keep these cool.
Really depends on how cheap you get it and what its intended purpose is.......
swb 1KZTE's up to 96 are hard to find, as are the 2lte ones as the 4.8 diffs in them are in high demand.

Re: sx5 landcruiser
Also, the Sx5/Bundera are relatively rare over here, so they tend to get snapped up!!!!
Don't think you will find that model with anything other than the 2.4 of the 5 cyclinder Pz something or other??

Re: sx5 landcruiser
Thanks for the replies.
The one Im looking at is a LWB with 149k's on the clock.
I usually do the air flow / exhaust on my vehicles so this would be an early mod for me. Maybe an oversized radiator..? I'll take a look at the other threads..
I like the Lexus V8 idea Jerry!
As for intended use I'll be commuting from Whangaparoa to Auckland central for the first few months of owning the truck. This will mean Im doing approx. 1.5 hours of low rev motorway driving per day. Dont intend to do much towing at this stage.
Will be looking to take the truck along the west coast beaches, getting it kitted out to the level where I can do some good 4wd training courses and taking things from there..

Re: sx5 landcruiser
Pre 1990 models have the manual hub (instead of those stupid electic hubs), and drum rears (jafa does a conversion kit to suit the MR2 calipers), Beam axle, check the front suspension bushes (front passenger panhard rod seem to flog out first, check for rust arounf the front window frame and along the roofline edges .... especially the drivers side (all 70's rust out here....its the way they were welded), 33's will fit easily, 2.4 will spin them.... may find it a bit gutless with them on. 85-90 had the 2LT, 90-93 had the 2LTE, 94 -95 had the 1KZTE, 90 series replaced both swb/lwb from 96 which went to IFS
Diffs are 8" Hilux ones, front is a high pinion, suspension for the pre 90's are slightly different to the 90-95 ones, basically you get a bit less suspension travel but its still coils and its a nice ride either on or off road. Seats are nice and comfy too
Economy....... Was getting 400k per tank with my 33" mudzilla's, not sure how much different the 2LT was .... stock I have heard 500.....

Re: sx5 landcruiser
Ok cool
Its a '91 so a 2L-TE then I guess.. Economy seems ok. Thanks for the rust tips!
This person is claiming a lot of k's per tank for their VX LTD cruiser, I figured the 2.4L would mean better economy than the 3 or 4.2L..

It's not always the bigger the motor the worse the economy. you gotta remember that a small engine in a big vehicle has to work harder which means using more fuel and the big motor doesn't have to work as hard.

Good point. Hard not to think about economy as a major decider these days, I'll bear that in mind..
