Pajero Conversion

Post by prolog »

Hi,

Can anyone suggest an economical engine conversion for a 2.5 Mitsubishi Pajero SWB.

I am thinking about a 3.8 V6 Commodore engine or a Mitsubishi v6 6a12.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi
there isnt an econo swap they all cost big bucks.
With the Holden V6 would you be thinking of swaping the gearbox as well?
If you have driven a Mits V6 you would soon find out these motors go like s..t off a shovel, Reliablity could? be a different story and but is still a far better option than the Holden. Both swaps will cost heaps If you do deside, what ever, keep us informed

Hi DJ

Thanks for your input. I am not sure whats really involved in doing the conversion so don't know what's needed as far as gearbox goes. Your helpful tips will be much appreciated.

I would think that the 3.0 litre V6 engine swap would be the better option also, if the model is a later model that you have (92+ from memory) it shouldn't be too much different.
I would think that the mounts etc will be the same place.
The V6 engine is great for reliability.

2.5 diesel currently i presume??

I've seen 2.4litre straight 4, 3.0 and 3.5 litre v6 versions in the 92 onwards rigs

the 2.4 litre motor is very economical in the magnas (a zillion times better than the old 2.6)

the 3.0 wasn't reknowned for economy

the latest 3.5l v6 does great economy you could try this conversion if you could be bothered, or just upgrade to a later model 3.5l rig.....

Hi just some of the things that need to be addressed before a engine swap
1) money how much then double it every time you think you have a final amount
2) a tool box and a mechanic friend with another tool kit thats able to service any and all equipment every make and model plus the after hours number of Repco. Dont worry about the money because the bank manager now knows your phone number and has it on speed dial
3) Get to know your neighbours you may be over there alot picking up parts that did fit 'I know I took it off therefore it must go back' thrown in disgust.
4) If you are married or have kids send them away NOW why wait for the divorce when they and the nieghbours learn new 4 lettered words. This also applies to pets, they will learn a new commarnd and will leave home usally with the bit you threw at the kids landing in the nieghbours place who is now threating to kill you because he just run over the part that use to fit , with the lawn mower flickin up rearanging the family jewels.
5) Answer the door, the bank manager is here checking to make sure you are not feeding a lost tride of Sumo wrestlers.
6) Find new machanic friend as he got pissed off when the dogs and kids took off with his tools. Direct amblance to next door.Think about buying a metal detector , makes finding parts, kids? Pets easier.
7) Buy beer it always looks better after a beer.Buy now as the bank is about to repo the house.

there is more, no dout others will add to this list and this is DAY ONE have fun DJ
ps I do this for a living and they wonder why I like???? R/Rovers

Thanks a million for your helpful info. suzukisam.

I will look at the 2.4 or 3.5 litre v6. I don't know if running my diesel is worth the cost of road taxes...I'm opting for fuel economy at the mo.

my old man has had a series of mitsi petrol cars.

2.6 litre magna (1993) sucked gas like it was going out of fashion

2.4 litre magna (1996) economical and powerful (suprisingly torquey)

3.5 litre daimante (2000) economical when driven carefully (7.5-8 litres per 100kms) and have jump when required.

the 4wd versions will use more fuel due to aerodynamics or lack thereof

i think you will find it cheaper in the long run to keep driving what you have or upgrade to a new vehicle with the petrol motor as standard.

the cost of changing motors will severely outweigh the running costs saved unless you are doing huuge mileages

Hey there' Ive got a pajero '90 V6 and its ok on gas, and has enough grunt, it's the 3.0l sohc, and it's no where near as complex as the later dohc 3.5l, my 2 cents worth.
