suzuki drive problems.

well went to the laurie sansons last weekend was an awsome day, thought i broke a cv as i started to get no drive on the front left wheel. had a look tonight pulled both cvs out left one didnt turn when i put the axle in one hand and the cv in the other but it did have a little movement like 1mm either way, does this mean its stuffed?

the other cv looks ok, then i pulled the diff out because someone thought i had a lsd or locker in the front which i had no knowledge of when i bought the truck and it turns out it is a welded front diff.


i have checked all the splines and the diff for any chiped teeth and there are none. so my question is should this just be the case of swapping the left cv with one that works? and also can i swap the front diff with the rear as i want a locker in the rear not the front.

Easy questions first . No you can not put the front diff in the rear . They are identical (ish discounting 2 and 4 pinions ) except for the side gears . This is what the axle shafts slide into , the spline . Anyway these get welded in place when the diff is welded so can not be swapped out for larger side gears to make it fit the rear , due to the larger axle diameter .

1 mm of play in the cv sould not mean it does not work , noisey but should still be ok . Is there any cracks in the bell part of the cv's , are the balls in good nick ( a guy at work drove his noisy cv's long enough for the balls to say see ya and depart the scene , the car still drove ) Something else to check is the hub , ensure its clean and engages properly .

thanks all for your input the slpines on the axle are fine, the hub was rather warm after i drove it about 300meters, just need to go buy some circlip plyers to get the cv off then il give it a better inspection when its clean.

right well found out whats wrong, the bell part of the cv has cracks all over the place and if i pull the cv to one side then twist it it turns so its stuffed. couldnt get the dam thing off the axle though so i can replace with another one.can anyone help me with this?

put another cv in for the meantime with the right axle in so it does drive but that cv is on its way out as it clicks alot on full lock, so il just drive it till it breaks.

Get a length of pipe slightly bigger and longer than the axle shaft and slide the axle and cv into it . Make sure the pipe sits nicely on the part engaged with the axle . put a block of wood on the floor and drop the lot on the block . After a drop or two the axle will drop out the bottom , hence the block of wood and not the concrete floor .

If you don't have any pipe you will just have to try and tap it off , they are held on by a spring clip in the end of the axle .
If the cv is that badly cracked a good wack may see the cv split open , then you could get to the clip . Never tried this though .

You'll probably find that the axle is buggered too. Usually the bell cracks, and the centre star fractures, then the axle ratchets inside the broken star and munches all the splines off.

You might get away with it if you stop when you hear the break, but if you've been driving in it since I can almost guarantee the axle will be farked.
