Auto Air Conditioning Firm Wellington / Lower Hutt

Post by kiwiphilip »

Hi

I have searched the threads without success so does anyone know of a suitable firm in Wellington / Lower Hutt that they would recommend to have a look at the airconditioning on my Safari.

It doesn't switch on but when I apply power directly to the airconditioning pump it works (though with lots of bubbles in the sight glass) so I'm assuming that sitting in the garage for 6 months has let the seal dry out and the gas escape.

There will be a pressure switch in the system somewhere, so it won't start if the gas charge pressure is too low.
Bubbles in the sight-glass in a R134a system don't mean much but most R134a systems don't have a sight-glass.

Does it have the modern quick-connect fittings (R134a) or a male threaded flare fitting (R12)?

Overseas hydrocarbon refrigerants are making massive inroads into vehicle aircon. Cheaper, CFC free (not an ozone depleter), more efficient than R134a and doesn't have the seal compatibility issues either.
But the NZ aircon industry seems pretty much against it.

Saw a mitsubishi fridge the other day with pentane refrigerant stickers on it, hydrocarbons have been used in commercial refrigeration for ever. Wonder when we'll change.

Thanks for that information, I'll try Premier Air in Wakefield Street.

The fittings are male threaded like a large schrader valve on a tyre so I guess its R12 (its just as it came in from Japan in the mid-90s, it's a 1988 24V model). There is a Pressure Switch along with a Fast Idle Control and the A/C Thermo control.
