Longer Brake Hoses

Post by KiwiBacon »

I need some longer brake hoses for my rangie. Anyone got a favourite supplier?

M10x1 male threads on each end, roughly 500mm long (will confirm length later). There's no-one local so it'll be phone/email order.

Enzed hoses did mine, it was the towns head office so i guess they had more parts on hand, did em while i waited, 30 mins at $40 each, give your nearest Enzed a call, they were by far the best choice, everyone else dicked me around and couldnt give me a definate

Good point, plenty of hose doctors in this neck of the woods. I even have some old hoses I can probably cut the fittings from.

I thought braided lines were illegal for road use here.
External braiding that is, they are all braided somewhere internally but that's harder to damage than external.

Most of the good brake shops will be able to do steel braided brake line that comply with the rules. They have a clear plastic / PVC or whatever cover over them. The material costs about twice that of the rubber stuff but it uses the same fitting and takes the same time to build. The longer ones I got made for my truck were no more than $130 each which isn't much more than buying premade ones. Obviously you need to make sure the ones being made are up to spec etc as if not they aren't any good even on a certified truck. My engineer checked mine and didn't even record them as they have the right numbers in the hose so comply with normal rules.

Unless the rules have changed in the past 2 years that is?

I was also recommended ENZED but got the same response that they don't do them for liability issues. I went into SafeRBrakes and they made them up on the spot. I ruined one in testing and went in to get another which they made up on the spot - simple, easy and reasonable.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

When I did my body lift the local Auto Stop sent my "samples" to Safe-R-Brakes.
About 3 days later the samples were back in Auckland with another set made to suit... and they worked out at about $35 each including Auto Stop clipping the ticket on the way through.

I had tried Waitemata Hydraulics but got the "I can do a hydraulic line on a 150 tonne digger but I am not certified to so a brake line". He told me there are only three places in Auckland that can (MOT / LTSA / WOF ?) legally make brake lines, one was a speed shop so I can just imagine the non-realistic price to make five lines for my toy.

Yeah mine were about $20 something each - My memory is bringing up about $26-27 for some reason.

Ive got no idea what your application is, but have you considered moving where your hard lines mount?
Any one can make hard line (no cert, but must have a double flare) and often these days there is plenty of room to move the standard hard lines any way.
You other option is see if another model from a similar truck has something that will work. For example, if a standard $25 Hilux part from partsmaster etc will work on you cruiser, then thats brilliant.

Just some thoughts to make your life easier/ save you some coin, might not work for you though.

Yes I did consider that, but at $35 for each new hose it wasn't worth the hassle.
They said they'd be in the post today (same day I ordered), truely amazing service if they are.

That's Safe R Brakes Chch.
