Terrano Tappets
Terrano Tappets
How do? I am looking at a 92 2.7 non turbo but the tappets are a little noisy. How much is involved in tuning them up? I have no probs doing this with a petrol car. Much difference with a diesel truck
Any info helps

Tappets are simple and a common thing on the TD42/TD27, possibly a weak oiling fault to the valve gear but no long term ill effects although they can wear the rockers and rocker shaft.
For rust have a very hard look under the rear seats and from underneath arround the seatbelt anchorages, any blistering means no WOF and a $2000 repair bill. You have to replace the complete floorpan in the rear and these vehicles are prone to this fault. Check for BlowBy from the oil filler cap and white smoke on cold start as possible bore wear and oil leaking from arround the Turbo.
A good truck but with limited aftermarket parts available in NZ

The rust problem in these vehicles can be major, but if the rust is only minor around the seatbelt anchor points then a support bar can be added, all the relavent info on this site.http://www.lvvta.org.nz/index.html
just thought i'd mention this i know of one of these purchased for $800 as the previous owner was told the floor needed to be replaced, the vehicle was repaired for under $1000. (thats a cheap 4WD

Too right. Don't buy original Nissan as they will really put a whole in your pocket. Find a good Nissan wrecker and stick with him. Mines excellent, never lets me down. finds the part at the right price all the time.

Correct
Its a common fault with the TD series engines. The rocker shafts wear premirturly.
This is more common on the the TD27 than the TD42. I had a terrano, it had noisey tappets, and i ended replacing the rocker shaft, same with the curent TD42 in my safari.
Its very common. Its $270 for a rocker shaft for the TD42, and about that same for the Terrano.
Adjusting the tappets are the same as that on any petrol engine that has the same set up with a lock nut and adjuster. All you neet is a flat head screw driver, 10 mm spanner and feeler gauges(plus something to turn the engine over with.
Looking retrospectively, i should have just adjusted the bloody things untill they were as close to the correct tolerance as i could get and lived with it.
Hope thats usefull
