Diesels don't have a throttle butterfly valve so there is no need for one

some diesels have a butterfly (used for emmsions purposes) and a BOV can help on those. however generlly its easier just to get rid of the butterfly.

I contemplated a BOV on mine as it the turbo would stall when I went from WOT to nothing during comps. I never did but it was thought about. It is a case of in a worked deseil there 'may' be a place for them to protect the turbo but I would imagine it is a waste of time for most.

You'd also need a real control system for it. Something that monitored pedal position and boost. Apparently there is something available for the duramax along these lines.

Unfortunately almost all the BOV's for sale in the aftermarket are solely to make noise. Some even boast about being the loudest.
Not good for the engine either, watch your average clown ricer and the cloud of black unburnt fuel that gets dumped out the exhaust when the BOV vents. Engines which have an airflow meter (instead of a MAP sensor) think all that dumped air is still going through the engine.
The factory systems dump it back into the intake (behind the AFM) so it does still go through the engine.

the few guys i know of that do run BOV's have it rigged via idle switch and clutch switch. with moderatly worked motors, lead feat and constant gearchanging apparantly it helps keeps the turbo rpm up.
i suspect if you drive it more like a truck rather than a sports car then the effect is proberly minimal.

But when you have a worked TD42 it behaves like a sports car so you have to drive it that way!
But seriously, in comps when you go from full boost and high revs to full stop in about 1 metre you do need something. Not good for the motor (or driver!) but that is racing. Good ideas about using the idle switch etc.
