When fitting the circlip on the end with the hub on, the shaft has enough travel to go in too far to get the clip on, so you put the clip aside and work the shaft back out and as you try to put the clip on again it goes back in. But if you thread a bolt in the end of the shaft you can pull it out as you put the clip on. Makes life a lot easier!
