Pinching heavy duty tubes
Hey yo,
I've pinched two quick dump heavy duty tubes lately around the valve stem. 35x12.5 MTRs on 15x10 rims. I've run them as low as 15psi which works best for my 80 series in the sand.
Is there anything causing this else aside from burrs where the valve passes thru the rim? I'm going to get them all taken apart and deburr them myselfs but could fitting be the problem?
Anyone suggest a place in Auckland that has a clue and isnt a group of muppets?

try a place that deals in tractor tubes or if you see a tyre fleet truck on the side of the road ask them they MAY have a clue

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
Tubless tyres do move around on the rim i.e. the tyre may rotate slightly (or a lot) on the rim causing the valve to be ripped out of the tube. The tubes may be rubbing on something on the rim or tyre. Maybe its speed or terrain at 15 psi. Numerous possibilities.

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
I dunno what MTR's are like but maybe they are moving around on the 10" rims and damaging the valve stem when there slipping? If you've got dump valves in the HD tubes the valve hole should have been drilled out to 16mm in the rim and you should be able to see if theres any sharpe edges that need de-buring. I've never had any problems with my simexes or creepies but my rims are beadlocked

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
Yeah just wondering if the hole thats been drilled out and not cleaned up enough on the inside, they look alright from the outside.
My mate that I bought them off ran them on the same rims with the same type of tube and never had a problem with them..
The first one went down after I got home, had a snooze for a couple of hours and was dead flat.
Second one dropped pressures to check out a few dunes for camp sites then headed up the beach and parked up just got my rod holder out and was setting up my rod when I here pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssh!!!
Was not a happy fisher.

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
I would say that 10 in rims may be abit big for a 12.5in tyre also check that the tube is not overinflating and getting too thin.
I had a similar problem and have gone to staun internal beadlocks

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
The tubes are pretty well reinforced around the valve stem so it might be tyre slippage tearing the stem rather than pinching?

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
have you re drilled the tube hole in to the centre of the rim?

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
Just bought two new tubes and had them fitted, put one on the truck and the spare so far has bounced out of my truck and rolled around the drive and is leaking already
Just thinking there is something on that rim or the inside of the tyre so will look into it.
This is becoming expenive and to be honest I can't really be fucked anymore - heavy duty doesnt really seem so.
Here's some pics of one of the popped ones, both are in the exact same place but were on seperate rims.

so lets go back to the start..................

it seems the hole is nowhere near the valve stem.
looking at that there is something in there
when they were fitted, did the muppets remove the little stickers on the inside of the tyre.
these cause those holes all the time.
otherwise you will have to stand over the muppets when they do it to make sure they clean out the tyre thoroughly.
it only takes one little tiny piece of dirt and its all she wrote
good luck

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
Yeah I just assumed they were around the stem as the redrilled holes were a little shitty..
When I get this one taken off tomorrow I'll check for the sticker.. I watched him do the first one and he powerded it up good and seemed to know what he was doing.
Are MT/Rs clean on the inside, free of mould marks or are they quite rough?

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
most tyres are quite good on the inside, but ya still gotta make sure its thoroughly cleaned before a tube goes in.
any good tyre man should know this.
I hope you aren't paying for all this fitting and re-fitting.
that hole doesn't actually look like a sticker, coz theres no grazing around the hole.
seems to be a piece of dirt hole or something has poked through the tah
best I can come up with dude
hope it gets sorted for ya

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
ya havent got any sharp objects stuck through the tyre???
Can often go un-noticed when tubeless as the object is embedded in the tyre it doesnt leak,
then you fit a tube and this object punctures the tube

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
I checked the tyre where the hole is and it doesn't seem to be anything in the tyre but it could be hidden so that'll be something to look for tomorrow.
Yes paying for it all so far, if they wanna charge me tomorrow they can get fucked.

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh, just pumped up to 36psi after it leaked down to 10psi and now it isn't leaking threw it round a couple of times and it seems to have seated.
When I've got a bit more cash I'll get it looked at, for the time being it will be my last resort spare..

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
Thats a pretty clean hole in the picture, no obvious chaffing. I'd be checking the tyre for anything, its almost certainly not visible so use the back of your hand and lots of pressure, whatever caused that hole should draw blood unless you do lots of boxing.

Re: Pinching heavy duty tubes
well this might upset the apple cart, but i run 35 silverstones on my swb safari. i have removed my tubes altogether as i got sick of the tires and tubes spinning and ripping off at the valve stem. i carry 2 tubes in my truck and a couple of valves if things do ever hit the fan but it has been a blessing in diguise i think. i use to run at 12 psi in the rough but now go for 15-16psi and seems to keep things together and provides enough traction.
may look at some internal bead lockers at some stage but have heard mixed things about them.

If you sand off all the shiney paint and repaint with grit paint and dont you use any soap when fitting the new tyre you won't have a problem spinning a tyre on the rim. I run down to 5 lbs with no troubles.
I dont believe they are pinched. There must be some other cause because the hole is too round and in the wrong place for a pinch.
Cheers Richard
