I'm just wanting to know everyones ideas on waterproofing Toyota v8s.
I don't do many deep water crossings but I do go through watery mud bogs and small water holes ect.
I,ve looked on here for info but I could'nt find anything discriptive on what to do on these engines.

i have heard of people sealing the top covers and pressurising where the leads etc are by 1 or 2 psi, haven't noticed it affecting mine much yet...., www.lextreme.com may have some idea's

I've found that you don't need deep water to cause problems..
For starters there's a 5mm gap around the pulley in the bottom cover. I used thin rubber, cut to the diameter of the pulley glued to the outside of the cover behind the pulley.
Next, if you take the cambelt covers off, and the rotors off, you'll find a couple of holes big enough to stick your fingers thru. When you get mud splash on top of the engine, it gets thru the gaps in the covers, thru these holes, and into the rotors - cue a helluva misfire, complete lack of power, and very hard starting. (try, full power on in low 1st, 45 degree downhill, running on 2.5 cylinders, and only just making it to the bottom of the hill
)
If you've routed the igniter loom over the cambelt/plug covers, a tip is to cut them off right where they flare out at the end of the ridged part. So that you can get them off easy - in 2 parts. Use silicone and insulation tape around the edges of the covers. It might look a bit hori, but it's better than waiting for your truck to dry out.
There's little chance of getting water on the plugs themselves, but the usual trick of a smear of silicone around the ends of the leads helps - remember it makes the plug ends of the leads damn near impossible to remove.
And make sure your fan wiring is all waterproof. I'm now saving for 2 head gaskets.

Mine has a fuse in a nest of horrible looking wiring, I was thinking of replacing with one of those pop out 30amp fuses (assuming you can get these) in the dash somewhere so its easy to see (when you forget to switch the fan off going thru water)

] How did you seal this one?, are the rotors supposed to breathe?, if so would sealing with a breather pipe fix this?

I don't know if it's going to be a problem or not - i figure distributors never used to have breathers on them. you could try drilling a small hole in the alloy housing venting into the cambelt space..?
I've used a lot of insulation tape and strips of rubber around the top covers, plus made up "rubber" flanges with silicone on the joins in the covers - use vaseline to mask what you don't want it to stick to, and cover gaps where you do want it stuck by using duct tape. When the silicone's dry, you peel the tape off, and (in theory) you've got a rubber flange.
It was a bit hit-and miss for me, mainly because i was using engine oil.
But as i say, currently saving for repairs so i can't really test these ideas out yet. they're all done, i just can't run the truck for more than 10mins

Re breathers on the rotor....
My LJ50 has two breathers on the rotor, it was connected to the heater system, when doing a water crossing, you turned the heater on, it pressurised the dizzy cap, and kept the water out.
Currently have them running to a high point up inside the dash
