Pinking Scud...

Post by Brad230 »

Hi everyone. I did a search on this and couldn't find too much. I was just wondering if anybody has had any trouble with pinking on Escudo's? I have '94 Scud G16A. A while back I heard what I thought was the tell tale sound under load. So I retarded the timing a wee bit, taking into account the +-5 degrees on the underside of the bonnet. I ran it and thought it had improved slightly. At this stage the cam belt and water pump needed to be done, so I killed two birds with one stone and reset the timing after doing the belt and the pump. This time I went just a wee bit more. Now I know I am on the conservative side of the 5 degree mark. This seems to have alleviated the true pinking sound. However, there appears to be another sound that is coming from the little solenoid type doofery thingies on the front of the fuel module with the Mitsi logo on the front of them. The sound seems to be in the low 2-3500 rpm range and is also apparent when giving it just a few herbs at idle with the vehicle stationary and under no load. Does anybody know about these? Is it just a knock sensor or emission system kicking in which would tell me something is wrong with the way I have set the timing? Does it sound like I need to retard the timing even more? Any help would be grealy appreciated...

My 1990 8 valve rattles on 91 octane. Cure, dont use 91 octane petrol. Unless i know im just travelling to work, not towing a trailer or 4 wheel driving. Cheers.

Thanks ONOescudo for the reply, currently I am using 98 octane with the odd fill on 95 if I am not close to the right gas station. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the answer...

Thanks QUADRACER for the reply. I'll have to check the position of everything again as I must have missed the problem first time around. Thank goodness for forums!

Hi everyone,

I did a bit more investigation into the "pinking". I found the "Vent Solenoid Valve" that allows the fuel vapour from the fuel tank to enter the intake through the carbon filter was the component making the sound. At this stage I have not double checked the timing of the cam belt, but when I disconnect the VSV the noise goes away. Has anybody else had this problem? However, the Haynes manual suggests that for injected models there is no valve? Maybe I'm reading something wrong...

i just done fuel systems at tec, and the tutors said that the carbon filter does make a little bit of a noise when its letting vapour through to the intake, it may be nothing to worry about, how loud is the noise?

Thanks for that. The sound is not loud, so hopefully it's doing the right thing and I am just not used to a vehicle making that sort of sound and it being OK...
